Lara Croft fans are preparing for a new adventure in a long-awaited form with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, and questions on whether it’s a full remake have been answered.
Legacy of Atlantis brings the Lara Croft story back to its roots after three decades of globe-spanning adventures, with Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics at the helm of the title.

Is Legacy of Atlantis a Remake?
No, Legacy of Atlantis is not a full remake of the original Tomb Raider adventure, and is instead described as a ‘reimagining’ of Lara Croft’s first game.
This means that players won’t experience a direct step-by-step recreation of the original Tomb Raider game, and will instead experience some familiar situations, alongside some entirely new scenarios.

In the PlayStation blog after the June 2026 State of Play reveal, Legacy of Atlantis is described as having “been expanded with stunning new visuals, an immersive soundscape, and modernized gameplay that makes exploration, combat, and puzzles feel fresh.”
One example is in Peru’s Lost Valley, where puzzles have been “rebuilt from the ground up.” While the original moved you from one room to the next, Legacy of Atlantis opens things up into a “semi-connected environments you can traverse, explore, and approach from new angles.”
Will Legacy of Atlantis Have The Same Story as The Original Tomb Raider?
Legacy of Atlantis will feature a narrative story that will be familiar to those who love the original Tomb Raider title, but there will be “new surprises woven in.”
The core of the reimagining of Legacy of Atlantis comes in gameplay, bringing the three-decade-old title into the modern era, with a major focus on bringing the environments and puzzles up to date.

It seems the story itself, however, may be largely similar to the original title, though the promise of new surprises emerging adds intrigue into how the franchise will develop from hereon out.
Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics could opt to reimagine further classic games, or bring about entirely new adventures, but the first step is the launch of Legacy of Atlantis.
