Is Marvel’s Wolverine Open-World?

The countdown for Marvel’s Wolverine is well and truly on, with the release date in sight, and details of the game’s approach and open-world options have been confirmed.

After establishing a Marvel universe with the Spider-Man series of games, all of which feature open-world mechanics, it’s understandable that fans are beginning to wonder whether Marvel’s Wolverine will include similar mechanics.

If you’re unsure about the open-world details of Marvel’s Wolverine, Insider Gaming has you covered.

No, Marvel’s Wolverine will not be an open-world title, and will instead focus on a linear story path, visiting various locations.

This will make the Wolverine title a significantly different experience to Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man titles, which features vast open-world gameplay in New York, including a variety of side objectives, crime to stop, and collectibles to uncover.

However, this makes sense for Spider-Man, who is, for the most part, a street-level hero, focusing on his role as the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man and protecting New York.

Wolverine, meanwhile, is focused on protecting mutants spread worldwide, and with no indication that Charles Xavier has established the X-Men in the Insomniac Games universe, there’s no reason for Wolverine to be based in a specific location. Instead, he’ll travel the world.

That could, of course, change in the future if Insomniac Games wants to establish a base of operations for the X-Men, but having this approach initially makes a lot of sense.

What Type of Game is Marvel’s Wolverine?

Marvel’s Wolverine is a single-player, story-driven adventure that sees Logan travel to various locations worldwide, fighting to protect mutants.

Speaking to IGN, game director Mike Daly described Insomniac Games’ creation as having “comic book-style pacing, dense story, that’s like a rollercoaster, and it grips you from beginning to end.

“I can say we did not set out to make an open-world game or a sandbox game. What we really wanted was high octane, high intrigue, linear single-player adventure, and the missions reflect that in their structure.”

While there will be collectibles and secrets to uncover in Marvel’s Wolverine, potentially leading you to replay the game to unlock everything, it won’t have the same sort of features as Spider-Man.
