Unreal Editor for Fortnite is set to change the landscape – quite literally – for Epic Games’ esteemed battle royale shooter and represents a fundamental shift in how players will approach and experience the game. But is the Fortnite Unreal Editor coming to consoles?
What is Unreal Editor for Fortnite?
Unreal Editor for Fortnite allows players to shape their own experience. With a litany of tools carried over from Unreal Engine 5, players will be able to craft and publish their own fully playable games.
The editor operates alongside Fortnite’s Creative toolset and offers features that will allow players to create their own content with modeling and material tools as well as have access to Niagra which can be used to create VFX effects. The core tool however is Verse which is the new programming language that is currently exclusive to Unreal Editor for Fortnite. The programming language has been built to work in tandem with the Creative toolset.
A short concept video that was posted to Fortnite’s official YouTube channel shows exactly what the editor is capable of with a range of landscapes from Ancient Egypt to more sci-fi-heavy environments complete with dangerous creatures. Once the player-created game is ready for publishing it’s added to the Fortnite Platform where it can be experienced by other users.
Is Fortnite Unreal Editor coming to Consoles?
Safe to say that it’s a bit of a game changer for ol’ Fortnite, eh? The feature is currently in a beta testing phase on PC so you may be wondering if the feature is coming to consoles. The answer, for now, is no.
As it currently stands, Unreal Editor is a PC-only feature. However, that doesn’t mean that the console player will miss out entirely. If you’re playing on a console then you can collaborate with Unreal Editor teams and play test islands built in Creative 2.0. This could very well be sowing the seeds for the feature making its way to consoles eventually, but for the time being, the focus is on PC.
