The long wait for the latest release in the DOOM series is coming to a close, though there is some confusion around when DOOM: The Dark Ages takes place.
Since reviving the franchise in 2016, DOOM has gone from strength to strength to be a huge hit, particularly with the release on Xbox Game Pass, drawing more and more players into the world.
If you want to know exactly when DOOM: The Dark Ages is set chronologically, we’ve got all the details you need.
Is DOOM: The Dark Ages a Prequel?

Yes, DOOM: The Dark Ages is a prequel to 2016’s DOOM and 2020’s DOOM Eternal, as revealed by Bethesda in marketing prior to the game’s release.
DOOM: The Dark Ages is the third entry in the modern DOOM series, and while it’s the latest to release, it’s the first chronologically in the series, so expect to see cutscenes setting up situations you experienced in the other two games.
Don’t expect it all to be familiar hunting ground, however, as DOOM: The Dark Ages features the ability to ride dragons, a first in the series, and ventures into areas we haven’t seen in the initial two games.
The game takes players back to medieval times when the invasion of the demonic hordes first began, so expect a sort of coming-of-age story for the protagonist where the legends we all know and love start to develop.
If you haven’t played DOOM or DOOM: Eternal yet, a playthrough of DOOM: The Dark Ages is the perfect point to jump in.
Will there be a DOOM: The Dark Ages Sequel?
Technically, there already has been with DOOM and DOOM: Eternal, but if you’re wanting to know if a new game will be released at a different point in the series, the answer is more than likely yes.
DOOM has enjoyed a boom since the revival of the franchise nine years ago and it would be downright bizarre if there wasn’t another game releasing, although the specifics remain to be seen.
We could see a sequel to DOOM: Eternal, or we could move to an entirely different timely. Quite simply, the world is Bethesda’s oyster to do what it pleases with.
Before that though, id Softworks could be put to work on another game away from the DOOM franchise, perhaps Quake-related, but it’ll likely be a few years until we hear anything concrete.
