Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is bound to make waves this Summer, as we finally get to return to one of the best pirate adventures out there. With more content coming to the game, including new quests and characters, as well as some huge overhauls gameplay-wise, it’s left many questioning whether it’s a remake or a remaster.
It’s often a tough distinction to make, and the answer can sometimes be unclear. After all, what determines whether a game is a remake or remaster anyway? Both involve revisiting an older game, but there are actually some key differences between the two.
With that in mind, here’s whether Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a remake or a remaster, as well as what the difference is between the two.
What’s The Difference Between A Remake Or Remaster?
Generally speaking, a remaster polishes and updates an existing game for modern hardware, whereas a remake tends to build an entirely new game from the ground up.
Of course, when it comes to remakes, it’ll still be largely informed and based around the original game. That said, they often provide developers with more freedom to adapt an older game to modern standards, with updates to gameplay and visuals. Some examples include the Resident Evil and Final Fantasy 7 Remakes.
On the other hand, there are remasters. These tend to operate more as a visual and hardware upgrade, with a general focus on visual improvements and potentially some minor updates to the likes of controls and gameplay systems. Some good examples include The Last of Us Remastered & the Tomb Raider Remasters.
Now we know the difference between the two, it’s time to clarify Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced’s stance once and for all.
Is Black Flag Resynced A Remake Or Remaster?
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a remake of the original game, and not a remaster.
There are tons of changes made with Black Flag Resynced, with the melee combat of the game entirely reworked. Ubisoft have updated the system to be action-oriented, and it’s a harsh departure from the original’s.
Add to that more quests, islands and upgrades to unlock, and Black Flag Resynced is undoubtedly a remake of the 2013 classic. In case that wasn’t convincing enough for you, Ubisoft themselves have confirmed that it’s a remake with the following statement:
“Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a remake, rebuilt from the ground up on the latest version of the Anvil Engine, based on the original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. It features stunning updated visuals, upgraded gameplay mechanics, and new content exclusive to this remake.”
