ESL FACEIT Group has announced that IEM Cologne 2027 will feature a 360 stage for the first time in the Counter-Strike event’s prestigious history.
The event will run from August 4-15, featuring 24 of Counter-Strike’s elite for a share of $1,250,000, and, more importantly, the Cologne trophy.
The event will feature eight teams in the Playoffs, moving away from ESL’s traditional six-team playoffs for non-Major events. Running August 12-15, the playoffs will feature a single-elimination playoff bracket.
IEM Cologne innovates for first return after IEM Cologne 2026 Major
The event is the first return to Cologne after the IEM Cologne 2026 Major, a record-breaking event for Counter-Strike. The Major became the highest-viewed Counter-Strike event in history, attracting over 2.75 million peak concurrent viewers and over 100 million hours watched.
That viewership peak finally broke the long-standing viewership record held by the PGL Stockholm 2021 Major, the first Major after the Counter-Strike ecosystem was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event was the first time Cologne had hosted a Counter-Strike Major since ESL One Cologne 2016, but was worth the wait with extraordinary playoffs that delivered huge excitement for the sold-out crowd.
The event saw Team Falcons win their first Counter-Strike Major, finally delivering Nikola ‘NiKo’ Kovač hist first Major. After the victory, he told Insider Gaming, “There was a lot of pain, but today it feels like it was all worth it.”
The event was also redemption for Finn ‘karrigan’ Andersen, who was drafted into the Falcons roster after failing to qualify for the event with FaZe, only to go on and win it all.
Marc Winther, Director Esports Counter-Strike 2 at ESL FACEIT Group shared, “What happened in Cologne this year was remarkable, and it once again showed what makes IEM Cologne so special.
“It brings together the world’s best teams, fans from across the globe, an atmosphere unlike almost anywhere else in Counter-Strike, and a history that has made this tournament one of the game’s most iconic events.
“With four days of Playoffs at the LANXESS arena and the 360-degree stage design, we have an opportunity to deliver our most ambitious edition yet while staying true to what has made IEM Cologne such an important part of esports history for more than a decade.”
