How to Get More Steps in Blue Prince

Running out of Steps in Blue Prince is almost as bad as drawing up your final room and realizing you have no more ways to move forward. Everything might be in your favor, and your inventory is stacked, but it’s game over if you have no more Steps.

Blue Prince is a roguelike at its core. Each run is new, the layout is different, and many variables are randomized. You learn and improve through repetition and understanding of the nuanced mechanics. Blue Prince has understood these principles to a tee—hence the universal acclaim for the indie title.

But after several hours of the game, you can still find yourself needing more Steps. That’s where I jump in with suggestions and tips as I’ve learned the hard way.

How to Get More Moves in Blue Prince

You can draft new rooms that give you the ability to earn more Steps, you can reroll to redraw floorplans, Steps can be acquired through Constellations, certain Inventory items boost your Steps, and eating Fruit works.

Constellations

The Observatory is one of many rooms in Blue Prince. If you enter it, you can manipulate the telescope and look in the sky, and there’s a good chance of getting a reward, giving you more Steps. “The Steps,” for instance, gives you +3 Steps.

It seems to be luck which Constellation you get, but complete the wheel-turning minigame and claim your reward.

Draft Rooms

Blue Prince’s central mechanic is drafting rooms. Each time you interact with an applicable door, you choose the next room to advance your journey. Certain rooms bestow the gift of more Steps on you.

I’ve had the Nursery give me these conditions: “Whenever you draft a Bedroom, gain 5 Steps,” and I’ve had a Bedroom give me a one-off boost of 10 Steps for entering it.

Eat Fruit

There isn’t a hunger or starvation meter in Blue Prince, thankfully, but food is scattered around Mt. Holly. I’ve had more than my fair share of Bananas lying around in the Pantry for a Step bonus, certain conditions can make a meal appear in the Dining Room, and the Kitchen has a variety of veritable dishes in exchange for Coins.

Tasty treats include Bananas, Club Sandwiches, and Tomato Soup.

Inventory Items

A bunch of handy inventory items are found throughout the building. In classic roguelike fashion, the items move around and don’t stay in the same spot each game—this would be too easy.

However, they’re worth finding as having something like the Sleep Mask makes it so: “The first time you enter each bedroom with the Sleep Mask, gain 5 Steps.” It may not seem like a lot, but you have a chance to draft several bedrooms, and the extra steps are likely the difference between success and failure.

Check every room you go in, and never let complacency seep in!

Redraw Floorplans

Finally, you should make it a mission to explore everywhere and complete puzzle rooms. This gives you a great chance of obtaining Ivory Dice. The consumable has the following effect: “While drafting, you may use [Ivory Dice] to roll new floorplans.

In short, rerolling a set of three rooms gives you three new rooms with the potential for entirely new bonuses and conditions. This can give you a way out of a dire situation or offer a lifeline via more Steps.

What do Steps do in Blue Prince? Moves Explained

It’s one of the first lessons you’re taught. Image by Insider Gaming

Steps are a form of currency allowing you to enter a new area in Blue Prince.

I say “area,” as Steps can also be used when you’re outside. Be mindful of wandering outside Mt. Holly looking for nooks, crannies, and secret paths.

In general, Steps are what you need to venture around the many rooms in search of the mysterious Room 46. Any time you enter a new area or room, your counter in the top-left corner goes down by one. When you first start, you’ll likely not pay much attention to this as you’re too busy wrapped up learning new mechanics and intricacies of the game.

But a key thing to note is that while you lose a step if you enter a new area (unless it has a bonus saying otherwise), you also lose Steps if you revisit older areas. So, if you find an item on the west side of Mt. Holly and realize it needs to be used on the East side—or vice versa—you’re going to use a lot of Steps.

Choose your path wisely.

Blue Prince is a phenomenal game that manages to take the already-popular roguelike genre and revolutionize it. But that’s what I think, what about you? Drop a comment below to let us know if you’re enjoying it. Or, create a thread and start talking about it via our Insider Gaming Forum.
