After beating a demanding boss in a Souls-like-inspired game such as South of Midnight, the first thing players want to do is save their progress so they don’t have to repeat the grueling process over and over. However, is it possible to manually save in this game?
South of Midnight is a third-person action-adventure game set in the American Deep South. It follows a weaver named Hazel, who has been tasked with repairing tears in the universe by taking down mythical creatures. South of Midnight launched worldwide on April 8 on Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.
This is Compulsion Game’s first project since We Happy Few in 2018. That project was set in a dystopian English city, combining role-playing, survival, and roguelike elements. South of Midnight is closer to the Soulslike formula and, as such, uses a similar save system.
Can You Manually Save in South of Midnight?

No, there is no option to manually save in South of Midnight, as the game uses a regular auto-save system triggered by progression or other applicable events.
In YouTuber Rubhen925’s South of Midnight playthrough, you can see a spindle in the bottom-left corner when the game is autosaving. This usually happens after a cutscene or after a boss battle. It is slightly annoying that you won’t be able to save in other situations, but this is the standard formula for games of this genre.
Elden Ring and Dark Souls also use an automatic save system after you kill an enemy, pick up items, or rest at bond fire. Both also allow you to save and quit from the in-game menu manually, but that isn’t an option in South of Midnight.
Will South of Midnight Add Manual Saving?
South of Midnight will unlikely receive a manual save function, as the current auto-save mechanic is integral to the gameplay and flow.
While it would be nice to save whenever you want, it also disrupts the action when you need to go into the menus to save constantly. In addition, if you forgot to save after defeating a challenging boss, losing all of that progress would be infuriating.
Autosaves happen frequently, so losing your progress shouldn’t be an issue in South of Midnight.
South of Midnight’s main story only takes around nine hours to complete, so you will need something else to fill your time in April. If you played South of Midnight on Game Pass, Blue Prince comes to the service on April 10, and Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is a day-one Game Pass title on April 24.
