While swinging a massive Buster Sword proves a ton of fun, hacking and slashing at enemies, tossing out a few spells or healing your party makes a difference. But for spells, you require Materia. Here is how to get and use Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth!
How to Use Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
To use Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, you must first acquire some through regular gameplay, then access the menu and select ‘Materia & Equipment.’ From here, choose which weapon or armor piece you’d like to enhance. If the item features a slot for Materia, you can equip a new spell and use it in or out of combat through the ‘Commands Menu’ by pressing ‘X’ on the controller.
Cloud begins the game with a handful of Materia, and is provided with an additional one during the main story as you fight your way up Mt. Nibel. You’ll have access to:
- Healing
- Fire
- Ice
- Assess
Healing does precisely what it says on the tin, it heals. Fire and Ice are your two offensive spells, usable in combat against enemies. Assess, the Materia you’ll receive for this mission, allows you to examine enemies for additional weaknesses.

What is Materia?
In the Final Fantasy universe, Materia is a source of powerful magic and abilities that allow you and the rest of your party the ability to summon monsters, cast offensive spells, and even heal damage. But you can only equip so many Materia, and there’s a lot to choose from.
- Magic Materia: Offensive spells, including Fire and Ice, that help in combat encounters.
- Command Materia: Non-magical abilities, like Assess, that offer useful interactions with the world around you.
- Summon Materia: Allows you to summon impressive monsters, such as Bahamut and Alexander, to turn the tide of combat.
- Support Materia: A type of Materia that, when linked together with other Materia, enhances overall power by adding Elemental damage, resistance, or increasing range.
- Independent Materia: A Materia that enables various stat boosts to specific characters, with additional Health Points, Magic Points, Strength, and more available throughout the game.
