Hideo Kojima can be a little eccentric, but during a recent interview, the eclectic developer and creative mind behind Death Stranding and Metal Gear revealed that he’s also deadly. He mentioned that he has undergone extensive training while developing his games over the years, and that training has allowed him to unlock a very specific set of skills.
Put simply, Hideo Kojima can kill you in many ways, but he won’t tell you how.
‘That’s Kind of Sad’
Hideo Kojima recently sat down for an interview with SSense, a fashion label headquartered in Montreal. The interview took a deep dive into the complex mind of Kojima, who SSense dubbed ‘one of our greatest living world-builders.’
The conversation turned to Death Stranding, OD, and whatever else comes next for Kojima. He took a moment to stress that he won’t be playing Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, and then started talking about the ‘unoriginality’ of studios these days, suggesting that some sizeable brands aren’t living and breathing their work.
In particular, he said that he visited a ‘big-name studio’ to consult on an upcoming stealth game and was ‘deeply unimpressed’ by what he saw, being taken aback by folks not becoming more immersed in their craft.
People who are making military games, they probably don’t know how to dismantle a gun or shoot a gun. So that’s kind of sad.
When pressed on the topic, Hideo Kojima revealed that he knows how to handle a firearm:
I’ve been doing this training as well, and I learned so many ways to kill people as well.
Kojima has spent decades making games with a militaristic edge to them, focusing on espionage, stealth, and zany characters.
The Metal Gear franchise is one of the best-selling, most iconic stealth shooters out there, and Kojima wants to regain a little in that niche with Death Stranding 2: On The Beach and Physint, which many have dubbed a ‘spiritual successor’ to the Metal Gear series.
