Hideo Kojima can be a morbid soul at times. He’s one of the industry’s brightest and most revered creators, and at 62 years old, he’s still masterminding next-generation titles that push the boundaries of what a video game-based experience can deliver.
However, for all his creativity and innovation, he has often been documented musing over the concept of death, telling tales of leaving behind his legacy and reflecting on the ephemeral nature of life itself.
Recently, Kojima decided to let everyone know how he’d like to die.
Not Games, But Movies
Hideo Kojima recently appeared in an interview, one of the many he’s subjected to with immense regularity, and in one segment, he started talking about his ideal way to die. Par for the course where Kojima is concerned. Months ago, he was talking about leaving behind a USB packed with game ideas when he dies, so his team can keep creating as though he’s still there.
In a quote translated by Genki_JPN on social media, Kojima was recorded as explaining:
I’m someone who’s always thought when I die, I want to die in a movie theater.
I like the time before the movie starts the best. Enter the movie theater, the lights turn off, the commercials and trailers play, then just before the movie starts is when I want to pass away.
If you’ve ever spotted Kojima on social media, you’ll easily be aware of his love for cinema. The man never stops watching movies, and most of his best creations have been inspired by or paid homage to the films he loves the most. He’s always giving his two cents on the latest flick or television series.
In fact, one of the games he’s working on now, OD, will push the boundary of what a game is, edging closer to a deeply cinematic experience that promises to scare the pants off of players worldwide.

Hideo Kojima has nursed a troubling perception of the concept of death for several years, since a health scare put him closer to the edge than we’d like some time ago. It made him realize his mortality rather more intimately than he wanted, but it has fuelled his creativity ever since. He’s eager to do as much as he can before he passes on.
