According to a new official update on Steam, the Helldivers 2 team has announced that PC players will have to link their Steam account to a PlayStation Network account.
Beginning on May 6, 2024, new Helldivers 2 users on Steam will have to connect those accounts. Existing players on Steam will get a mandatory login on May 30th and have until June 4th to connect a PlayStation Network account.
The new Steam post cites the need for “protecting our players and upholding the values of safety and security.” It is intended to prevent “griefing and abuse” by enabling bans, as well as ban appeals.
Helldivers 2 first launched last February, and it has been widely successful. The devs even had to increase its server capacity early on.
Now, there has been some backlash among PC players over Helldivers 2’s mandatory PSN account. Unfortunately, many current players were unaware that the game already intended to introduce this rule early on.
Today’s Steam post mentions that technical issues at launch were the only reason connecting a Steam account to PlayStation Network was optional thus far. The devs note that a PlayStation Network account is free.
Today’s account linking announcement comes shortly after the devs appeared to poke fun at the recent Escape from Tarkov drama. They also recently announced the new Polar Patriots warbond update. Polar Patriots is coming next week on May 9th, and it’ll introduce new weapons, armor, and more.
