The Netflix approach for Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) was a win-win for all parties involved. The GTA 6 Extended Look not only drew over 31 million views and was the top-watched video in 87 of 93 countries, but it also drove thousands of signups to the video streaming platform.
In a new report from Ampere Analysis, the six-hour exclusive window for the 27-minute showing was Netflix’s third-highest sign-up peak in 2026.
How Many New Signups Did Netflix Get?
According to Ampere’s report, Netflix saw over 100,000 new signups in the United States on August 27. The only days with higher new subscriber acquisitions over the last year were the final episode of Stranger Things and the Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano MMA fight.
In addition to the new signups, Ampere says that over 5% of US members who didn’t watch Netflix in the previous 30 days returned to the platform to watch the GTA 6 Extended Look.
“This reactivation rate was higher than that of any series or movie on Netflix during the measured period,” the report reads.
Ampere senior research analyst Katie Holt says that although Netflix may not be able to directly compete with the largest AAA game franchises, it can “vie for the attention around them.”
“Trailers, reveals, and adaptations give Netflix a way into gaming culture without owning the games themselves,” she said. “GTA VI is a particularly powerful example, given the scale of the franchise and the anticipation around its launch.”
Senior research manager Louise Wooldridge added, “More than 100,000 sign-ups from a six-hour exclusive window shows the pulling power of a major gaming event. For Netflix, it also offers a way to compete with YouTube for gamer attention and to bring lapsed viewers back to the platform. For Rockstar, Netflix opens GTA VI up to audiences beyond the franchise’s traditional core.”
