GTA 6: Everything we Know so far About Grand Theft Auto 6

GTA 6 could be the most highly anticipated video game of all time and it will likely smash many sales records upon its eventual release. There has been a lot of time between the release of GTA 5 and the next entry in the series, which has only continued to build anticipation and excitement among players. The GTA 6 trailer has finally been released and we’ve gotten a first look at what to expect from the game. Here is everything we know so far about GTA 6.

Rockstar Games Releases The GTA 6 Trailer Early

It has been a decade since GTA 5 was first released, with the game launching on September 17, 2013. Since then, GTA 5 has gone on to become the second best-selling video game of all time selling over 190 million copies worldwide.

The GTA 6 trailer was officially announced and set to be revealed at 9 am ET on December 5, 2023. However, leakers managed to get hold of the trailer before its official reveal and post it on social media. Rather than trying to contain the leaks, Rockstar Games decided to unexpectedly release the trailer early and it is now live on YouTube to watch.

You can check out the official GTA 6 reveal trailer below.

GTA 6 Will Launch In 2025

At the end of the 91-second teaser trailer, it was revealed that GTA 6 will finally be released in 2025. No concrete date was given, but this is common for initial reveal trailers and was the case with other titles such as GTA 5 which didn’t have a release year in its first trailer.

GTA 5 was originally released in September 2013, Red Dead Redemption 2 in October 2018, and Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition in November 2021, which means that we likely will see GTA 6 released towards the end of 2025. We will likely get a definitive release date sometime in 2024 or early 2025.

What Platforms Will GTA 6 Be Released On?

What Did Microsoft Think Of The PS5 When It Was Revealed?

Following the release of the GTA 6 trailer, Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive released a press release which stated that confirmed the game will launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

“Rockstar Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., is proud to announce that Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to PlayStation 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X/S games and entertainment systems in 2025.”

Will GTA 6 Launch On PC?

A lot has changed since the release of GTA 5 when it comes to PC gaming. When the game was released PC gaming wasn’t close to the popularity it is at now and was just starting to regain traction after being neglected by developers for many years.

GTA 5 was eventually released on PC two years after its initial release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and a year after the next-gen PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases. The gap narrowed to just a year between console and PC releases for Red Dead Redemption 2, meaning PC players didn’t have to wait as long for Rockstar Games’ latest adventure.

It would be great if GTA 6 launched on PC too, but based on how Rockstar Games traditionally operates, it is unlikely that the game will be released on PC on day one. The last time a GTA game launched on both console and PC was GTA 2 back in 1999.

GTA 6’s Setting And Map

GTA Vice City

It has been rumored for a long time that GTA 6 will be set in the fictional Vice City, which is based on the real-life Miami, Florida. This made sense as GTA 4 was set in Liberty City while GTA 5 was set in San Andreas, and Rockstar Games usually rotates between these three locations for its games.

After first being confirmed with the GTA alpha leak in early 2022, the new trailer finally gave us official confirmation from Rockstar Games as it is featured throughout the trailer, including signage that said ‘VICE’ or ‘Vice City’ which could be seen throughout.

GTA 6 Could Feature Multiple Continents

It has been rumored for a long time that GTA 6 could feature multiple locations and extend beyond Vice City. One of the early rumors was that a section of the game could take place in a fictional Rio De Janeiro, although this has never been substantiated.

More recently, industry analyst Michael Pachter has claimed that the reason GTA 6 has taken so long to develop is that it will fuse multiple locations together in one game, with it being suggested that Vice City, San Andreas, Liberty City, and a fictional version of London will all be playable in the game.

If this is true, this will be the largest game that Rockstar Games has ever produced and will make previous titles such as Red Dead Redemption 2 seem small in comparison. And if you know anything about Red Dead Redemption 2, it is anything but a small game.

GTA 6 Could Be Up To 500 Hours Long

Yes, you read that right, it has been theorized by analysts that with the sheer scope of the game and the multiple locations, GTA 6 could be set to feature up to 500 hours of content. Of course, this will be different for every player and some will take a shorter or longer amount of time.

To give you an idea of just how large GTA 6 could be, How Long To Beat has a 100% completion time for Red Dead Redemption 2 at 181 hours, meaning that the game could be two to three times as large as Rockstar Games’ previous release.

How Big Will GTA 6 Be?

If the recent leaks are true, then GTA 6 will surely be one of the largest video games ever made, which will mean an incredibly large install file. Some have suggested that it could be as large as 750GB and cost $150, but this is very unlikely to be true. But, with Red Dead Redemption 2 being 119GB on PC, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for GTA 6 to be around the 250-300GB mark.

GTA 6 Will Feature Two Protagonists

With the exception of GTA 5, which had three protagonists, the GTA series has always revolved around a single character. GTA 6 will continue what the previous game started by having multiple protagonists. These will be both male and female protagonists, however, it is currently unclear what role each will play and whether they will be switchable as they are in GTA 5.

GTA 6 Will Have A Female Protagonist For The First Time

When GTA 6 was leaked in early 2022, one of the most interesting details revolved around who we would be playing in the game. The leak confirmed that for the first time, one of the protagonists will be female.

The only other times a female protagonist has been seen in GTA was during the early top-down games of the 90s, but it is hard to count them as it didn’t matter who you chose and there was no way to tell you were playing as a female. This will likely create a Bonnie and Clyde-type dynamic between the male and female protagonists and it will be a fresh change of pace for the series.

Social Media Will Play A Huge Part In The GTA 6 Story

Rockstar Games has always had its finger on the pulse when it comes to current trends and technology. GTA 5 had a focus on social media, with the game having its parody of Meta’s Facebook platform. Over the past decade, there has been a rise in social media influencers and short-form video content on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. Throughout the GTA 6 reveal trailer, some clips look like Reels with chat messages and comments overlaid on the clips. With Miami being a hub for influencers, it is no surprise that this would be featured in GTA 6 too.

It will be very interesting to see how this plays in the GTA 6 story, whether short clips are used to further the story and are used in cutscenes, or whether players will be able to access a fictional version of Instagram and TikTok and watch a feed of video content that shows the citizens of Vice City getting up to all kinds of antics.

Will GTA Online Carry Over To GTA 6?

Despite being a decade old, GTA Online still generates over $1 billion per year for Rockstar Games, so that is one cash cow it won’t be looking to get rid of.

With the mode being as popular, and profitable, as it is, we can expect GTA Online to carry over to GTA 6, although how this will work with progress made in GTA 5 is currently unknown.

What Will Happen To Your GTA Online Progress?

When it comes to what will happen to your current character and progress in GTA Online, it could go either way. With it being a brand new game it would make sense to start fresh and experience everything for the first time, rather than already having an extremely rich and powerful character at launch.

However, with people spending a lot of money on GTA Online over the years, removing all of that progress would be very unfair, so an option could be to keep the GTA 5 and GTA 6 versions of GTA Online separate.

Will GTA 6 Feature Crossplay?

GTA Online currently doesn’t offer crossplay capabilities, meaning a PlayStation user can’t join a lobby with their friend on Xbox for example. This could change with GTA 6 as many games now feature crossplay to make the game more accessible regardless of the platform. Until we get closer to the launch of GTA 6 though, and the new version of GTA Online we won’t know for certain.

Will The Los Santos Map Disappear Forever?

It is extremely unlikely that the current version of GTA Online will immediately disappear with the release of GTA 6, however, it likely won’t stick around forever. As gaming has evolved, we have seen GTA Online on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 shut down as the player base naturally declined as people purchased the newer systems.

As GTA 6 grows and the player base for GTA 5 declines, it is likely that Rockstar Games will eventually pull the plug on the original version of GTA Online.

Will GTA 6 Launch On PS Plus Or Xbox Game Pass?

With how popular GTA 6 will be at launch, there is no reason for Rockstar Games to put the game on either PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass. It is worth noting that right now, GTA 5 is available to play on Xbox Game Pass via console and Cloud Gaming.

So, if you happened to have never played the game before then now is the perfect time to experience one of the greatest games of all time.

Other Leaks And Rumors

gta 6 crime free

There are many leaks and rumors that have been revealed regarding GTA 6 over the past months and years, with some holding more weight than others.

One of these more recent leaks is that GTA 6 could feature a “crime-free” passive mode, which will prevent you from committing any crimes while it is active, such as being able to fire a weapon or run pedestrians over. With crime being one of the main focal points of the series, it seems unusual, but if you want to just be a citizen of Vice City and live a normal life then it will be an option for you.

Another rumor that has appeared multiple times over the years is that GTA 6 could feature cryptocurrency. No, this doesn’t mean there will be a GTA coin you can mine in real life and become rich from.

But, with cryptocurrency being harder to trace and being decentralized, it has become a tool that criminals use to transfer money, and with Rockstar Games having its finger on the pulse when it comes to including the latest trends, it would make sense that it is used in the game, much like how GTA 5 had a focus on social media a decade prior as sites such as Facebook were becoming popular.

Recently, Rockstar Games acquired the company behind the popular FiveM GTA Online Roleplaying servers. This will likely mean that many of its features, such as voice chatting and roleplaying features, will become standard in GTA 6’s version of GTA Online. But, one of the more interesting theories is that AI NPCs could become part of the game.

There was a mod released recently for GTA Roleplaying that brought AI to the game, with players being able to talk to NPCs in real-time and the characters responding back in realistic ways, such as building a backstory, thoughts, and feelings, adding another sense of realism to the fan-made mode. It would be really interesting to see these features implemented in GTA Online and it would mark a huge evolution in gaming to see AI included in such an iconic title.
