The Game Awards and the gaming industry as a whole are increasingly transcending their original medium. As video game properties are adapted into films and television series more frequently, there is a growing expectation for the award show to serve not just as a recognition event but also as an overall entertainment spectacle. Last year’s event featured The Muppets and hype for the upcoming Street Fighter film, with Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, and others on stage to promote it.

Many people are especially excited about the exclusive reveals and sneak peeks that the event will showcase for upcoming major releases. Last year’s event unveiled the latest Mega Man title, multiple new Tomb Raider games, and one of this year’s top-rated games, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.

Of course, the last game shown off at the 2025 event was Highguard; this kicked off a hype train for the title, which would result in it being live for less than 2 months before shutting down. Learn more about the trajectory of Highguard at this link.
