Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick comments on the gap between GTA releases and discusses why other developers haven’t been able to match Rockstar Games’ success.
Rockstar Games plans on finally releasing Grand Theft Auto 6 in November of this year, 13 years after the release of GTA 5. It’s not as though GTA 5 has struggled in any way, however. The game continues to sell 5 million games per quarter, and GTA Online continues to get quality-of-life updates that have secured its longevity as well. Now, Zelnick is discussing what “scares” Take-Two and what he believes will ultimately lead to another property rising up to truly combat GTA.
Take-Two CEO Says Creativity, Not Tech, Will Challenge GTA
During the TD Cowen 54th Annual Technology, Media & Telecom conference call, Zelnick Press stated that many have tried to create a massive hit the size of GTA or any of the major properties in Take-Two’s portfolio; however, they haven’t found success. He even alluded to former Rockstar employees unsuccessfully trying to match that success.
“Lots of other people have tried. Lots and lots, including former Rockstar employees. So far, they haven’t been able to do it. Doesn’t mean they can’t in the future, by the way. We’re always running scared. But it won’t be technology that changes the game. That won’t be the change. What’ll change is that some extraordinarily creative individual or individuals will show up and do something astonishing. Our goal is to get those people to work within the Take-Two system. If we fail to do that, we fail,” he said.
MindsEye is a single-player cinematic action game developed by Build A Rocket Boy, a studio founded by former Rockstar North President Leslie Benzies.
For anyone worried, Zelnick has confirmed the release date of GTA 6 at least three times in the last month. Learn more here.
