Both gameplay and story videos have given us a meaty look at 2027’s Fable. Playground Games has veered off-track with Fable from what it usually does best, and when I heard about the game’s length, I was personally elated, whereas other reactions were surprisingly understated.
Everyone’s situation is different. You could be in college, flunking exams and happily ignoring study time for more carefree gaming. Conversely, you could be a mum or dad with several kids, have an intense job with long hours, and you spend more time thinking about gaming than actually getting to do it.
Game lengths are subjective, but I’ve been amazed by feedback on Fable’s game length. If you fall on the wrong side of the track with this one, I’ve got some suggestions as to why 20-40 hours is the sweet spot.
Adult Life is a Busy Life
I can take you back to 2022, when it was revealed that Dying Light 2 would require 500 hours to see and do everything…and this immediately put me off ever buying the game. Yes, this was to cover every single millimeter of the map and do everything imaginable, but for many adults, 500 hours is a year’s worth of gaming, and it also told me that even a normal adventure was likely a huge undertaking.

With the gaming calendar becoming more bloated by the year, featuring more AAA and indie titles than ever, it’s becoming an expensive timesap to enjoy video games. If Fable is 20-40 hours, this draws me in more than it repels me, and I know that there’s enough content to satiate me before moving on to the next thing.
‘But it’s been 17 years since the last proper game, and this is all they could do?’ I’ve got a fun news flash for you if you’re not attuned to the ways of Fable.
It’s The Same as Any Other Fable Game
Fable games have never been 100+ hour RPG time sinks like The Elder Scrolls or The Witcher. Could that have changed for Fable (2027)? Maybe. But this is a game rooted in its own DNA and entrenched in a familiar blueprint of content and duration, quite simply.

An estimated 20-hour campaign actually makes this by far the biggest one yet, and the extra content takes it close to previous games. Although these are estimations by Playground Games, people’s gaming experience, how they approach RPGs, the chosen difficulty level, and other reasons will ultimately determine a ‘complete playthrough.’
Less Bloat and Filler
This, to me, is another glorious reason why Fable’s game length is so appealing. I can’t stand tepid, uninspired, and mundane side quests that don’t make me laugh, smile, feel accomplished, or feel anything at all, other than relief that it’s over. Fetch quests are sometimes a necessity, but no one likes them, let’s face it.

Give me a handful of detailed side quests with the level of polish and writing that could be expected of the campaign. Additionally, thrown in some bite-sized side missions that I’ll remember long after I’m done with Fable. Borderlands OGs might instantly perk up if I say the name Face McShooty. It’s barely a quest, and yet it’s stuck with me for 15 years. Expect Fable to favor quality over quantity.
Play Again in a Different Way
The magic of Fable is that you can be a goody-two-shoes, law-abiding citizen who wants nothing more than to be a savior, serving as a shining beacon of hope and heroism. Alternatively, you can be the biggest rat ever, killing, stealing, and making the lives of everyone in Albion hell.
Do another playthrough and choose completely different choices, experience different endings, and essentially enjoy a different version of Fable than the journey you opted for the first time around, maybe even the second!
DLC
Should the urge for additional content consume you, know that DLC is in the works. The developer revealed the news on June 7, 2026, that Fable: Order of the Hero is happening:
“Write the next chapter of your legend in Fable: Order of the Hero, a story‑driven expansion (coming post-launch) that draws you into the secrets of a dark, ancient cult hidden deep within the perilous beauty of Albion.
Fable: Order of the Hero features a brand-new region that brims with danger, wonder, and whispers of long buried power. As you explore, your deeds earn the cultist’s admiration, and you rise to become their latest (and greatest) celebrity overseer.
With your newfound authority, you’ll guide their rituals and shape the cult into your own heroic vision, whether noble, nasty or just plain weird. But becoming the new boss does beg a darker question. If the cult has a vacancy for a new Heroic leader…
…what happened to the last one?”
Order of the Hero comes with the Premium Edition, which suggests this will be a paid expansion, but this is a separate conversation.
