The Far Cry series offers some of the greatest single-player experiences in an open world, with the series offering some of the wildest and most exotic locations. Here’s every Far Cry game and its release date in order.
14. Far Cry – (2004)
The first Far Cry game made its debut in 2004 and introduced players to Jack Carver, who is a former American special operations forces operative. The game received generally favorable reviews according to Metacritic and was a commercial success selling 730,000 copies in its first four months after release.
In 2010, Crytek announced that the PC version alone had sold over 2.5 million units overall. An eventual re-release would be released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2014.

13. Far Cry Instincts – (2005)
After the release of the original Far Cry, Crytek moved on to making the Crysis series which meant the Far Cry series needed a new developer. Ubisoft Montreal took the helm, with Instincts following the same storyline as the original title.
The game was only released on the Xbox 360, but ports for the PlayStation 2 and Gamecube were planned and eventually canceled.

12. Far Cry Instincts: Evolution – (2006)
The sequel to Far Cry Instincts was Far Cry Instincts: Evolution which picks up where its predecessor left off. One of the best things introduced with this game was the map-maker, which was a massive fan favorite with players.
In addition to the map maker, Instincts Evolution introduced new weapons, vehicles, and multiplayer modes.

11. Far Cry Instincts: Predator – (2006)
Far Cry Instincts: Predator was released on the same day as Instincts Evolution and included graphically enhanced versions of both Instincts and Evolution.

10. Far Cry Vengeance – (2006)
2006 was a busy year for the Far Cry series as Vengeance was also released in the same year as the two Instincts titles. Vengeance received “generally unfavorable” reviews on Metacritic, but was hindered by the lack of graphical improvements over past releases.

9. Far Cry 2 – (2008)
Gone with the random names and back to good old numbers, Far Cry 2 introduced new characters and settings and completely changed the Far Cry formula. The change would be the start of something new for the Far Cry series, with each of the next releases being radically different from the previous.
Far Cry 2 was the best-selling game in America on PC during its opening launch week and was praised for its change in direction. Within a year, it was reported that the game sold an impressive 2.9 million copies worldwide.

8. Far Cry 3 – (2012)
Far Cry feature introduced one of Far Cry’s most famous antagnonists, Vaas. Michael Mando, the actor behind Vaas was praised for his performance and Far Cry 3’s box art alone, featuring Vaas, is instantly recognizable. Far Cry 3 is seen as a critical turning point for the Far Cry series for many, with many believing that Far Cry 3 is what truly set up the series for stardom.
In October 2014, Ubisoft reported that approximately 10 million copies of the game had been sold, making it one of the biggest-selling Far Cry games to date.
The game even won Game of The Year at the 4th Canadian Videogame Awards.

7. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon – (2013)
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is the standalone expansion to Far Cry 3 and is the eighth installment in the Far Cry franchise. The game took a radical approach to its content and was a retro-futuristic parody of 1980s action films, cartoons, and video games. The game was developed and completed within just six months and according to some hardcore Far Cry players, is one of the best games in the series.
The game had sold over 1 million copies by the end of 2013.

6. Far Cry 4 – (2014)
Far Cry 4, as the name suggests, is the fourth main installment in the Far Cry series. This time, the game is set in the fictional Himalayan country of Kyrat. Players take control of Ajay Ghale, who’s a young Kyrati-American fighter caught up in a civil war between Kyrat’s Royal Army and the Golden Path.
As with most games in the mainline series, the formula of Far Cry 4 doesn’t change much, but the game received “generally favorable” reviews and was a huge commercial success. It was reported that the game sold more than 10 million copies.

5. Far Cry Primal – (2016)
Far Cry Primal took a radical change from its predecessors due to its setting which is before the modern day. As the name suggests, Primal is set in 10,000 BC, during the end of the Upper Paleolithic in Europe. The player takes control of Takkar, who’s on a mission to become the leader of his tribe.
What is a huge change for Primal compared to other Far Cry games is the use of weapons. Gone are the fully automatic assault rifles and RPGs, instead, the player needs to use melee weapons, bows, slings, and spears. The game is a massive change of pace and as such received mixed reviews from critics.
Despite the mixed reviews, Ubisoft reported that the game performed better than anticipated, but did not provide any sales results.

4. Far Cry 5 – (2018)
Far Cry 5 is the fifth main installment in the Far Cry series and one of the most successful. Selling an impressive 10 million units within its first two years, the game was praised for its open-world, epic moments, and great storytelling. The game became the fastest-selling title in the history of the franchise, more than doubling the sales of Far Cry 4.
The game did launch without controversy though, with many critics disgruntled on the game’s narrative concept which includes themes of religious fanaticism and the emergence of far-right political movements. The polarizing opinions left discourse in the gaming media scene, but the general player base didn’t seem to care.

3. Far Cry New Dawn – (2019)
Far Cry New Dawn is the narrative sequel to Far Cry 5, which took place 17 years after the events of Far Cry 5. The game received mixed reviews, and its sales were reportedly significantly lower than Far Cry 5 and its spin-off Far Cry Primal.

2. Far Cry 6 – (2021)
Far Cry 6 is the sixth and latest installment in the Far Cry series, which also was the first game in the series to be developed by Ubisoft Toronto. The game takes place in 2021 in Yara, a fictional Caribbean island nation inspired by Cuba and ruled by the dictator Antón Castillo played by Giancarlo Esposito.
After several delays, the game was eventually released in October 2021 to generally favorable reviews. The game’s sales have yet to be reported.
