Epic Games has filed a trademark for “Megaverse,” several years after losing a long battle over a trademark that resembled those very words. If anything, this seems like another legal dispute just waiting to happen, and we have no idea why Epic Games would go through the same ordeal without an apparent game plan.
Epic Games’ Megaverse
Back in 2022, Epic Games trademarked “Epic Games Megaverse,” for classes 09, 35, 38, 41, 42, and 45. It was a very general filing for its metaverse ventures. However, another company, Megaverse Ltd., already owned the “Megaverse” trademark, and its goods and services were very similar to Epic Games’s Megaverse.
Megaverse Ltd. opposed Epic Games’s trademark in 2023, and this created a legal dispute that ended in favor of the opposition in 2025. As a result, Epic Games had to remove most of its “Megaverse” classifications, leaving only 35 and 45.
The authorities ruled that adding “Epic Games” before “Megaverse” did not make it unique enough, especially since the former is the company’s name itself, which many consumers separate from the product when reading.
Now, Epic Games is back with another trademark, one that is even more direct and not even the least bit unique. This time, the classification includes 09, 38, 41, and 42. And if you read the opposition’s claim from the earlier case, you would realize there is again a major overlap between the goods and services, especially in class 09.
That’s a lot of legal jargon, but the point is that Megaverse Ltd.’s trademark is still live, and Epic Games has done something that could be grounds for another legal dispute.
Previously, the company had to pay £700 in official costs to the opposition, but it might get worse this time. If Epic Games doesn’t have a solid argument, its “Megaverse” could be partially or completely blocked.
On the other hand, the older Epic Games Megaverse trademark is still live and well on the USPTO. The legal battle was mainly in Europe, which is why the latest filing has not appeared in the US, and it will most likely remain that way.
