Fight Night is officially coming back.
In a post on social media, EA Sports announced that the long-dormant boxing franchise was set to make its return. There are no other details about the game other than it’s returning, along with a simple message from EA.
“To everyone who stayed in our corner: Fight Night is coming back,” the post reads.
A Game That’s Been On and Off For Years
In September, I had exclusively reported that the original plans for Fight Night’s return had been canceled roughly a year ago. However, with the company under new ownership led by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, that didn’t mean the series was dead. Rather, a restart of the game was always possible.
As was said in the initial report, Saudi Arabia has a major stake in boxing. It was always believed that there would also be more discussions about the return. Based on the announcement, it appears that those discussions were held—an exact timeline is unknown—to the point where a decision was made to bring the series back.
A Fight Night return has been discussed or in the works on and off for nearly a decade. The company had spent its focus on developing the UFC series with a lot of the same technology expected to be used for any boxing game should it come.
This also isn’t the first time that EA has announced the return of a franchise without anything else. The company did that with both College Football and College Basketball. That latter, however, never saw the light of day after EA couldn’t get exclusive agreements completed with participating schools.
A timeline on when fans would actually see or get to play the new Fight Night game wasn’t given.
