Donald Glover opens up about how he got the role as Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. He also shares the importance of advocating for yourself.
Yoshi was teased in the post-credits scene of the original Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023. He would later be revealed in trailers for the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie. However, the first trailers revealing Yoshi did not reveal his voice actor. That came in the trailer that was revealed on March 9.
Now, Donald Glover has joined the cast as part of the film’s massive media push. During his interviews, he revealed how he got the role of everyone’s favorite green dinosaur.
Donald Glover Asked Illumination for the Role of Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Donald Glover revealed during an interview with ScreenRant that he personally approached Chris Meledandri from Illumination and asked for the role. When it was revealed that Yoshi would likely just be saying his name, Glover doubled down, saying he could make it work.
“I literally hit up Chris, and I was like, ‘I know y’all got to use Yoshi.’ But they told me, ‘”He’s just going to say, probably, ‘Yoshi.’ We’re going to keep it very traditional.'”‘ I was like, ‘”‘I can be traditional,’ said Glover, who went on to say that you should always ask for the roles you want.
Donald Glover also said during the media tour that it was one of his greatest honors that people didn’t realize anyone with a high level of Fame had been cast as Yoshi because the performance was so true to character.
