Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 came at a pivotal moment in the history of Activision’s popular franchise. It was a chaotic time with turmoil rocking developer Infinity Ward.
Journalist Cade Onder has put together a two-hour documentary looking at the game’s history, featuring interviews with the likes of Robert Bowling, Michael Condrey, Glen Schofield, and more.
Premiering on April 3 at 6pm ET, Onder says that telling the story of Modern Warfare 3 felt like something that needed to be told in more detail.
“It came at such an interesting point in Call of Duty’s history,” Onder said of his desire to tackle this subject. “There was a huge turning point, which is Infinity Ward imploded during that time.”
He added that, at the time the news was breaking, everything came from anonymous sources. But with over a decade passing by, he was hopeful people would be open to speaking about it on the record.
“There was such a dramatic story there of Vince (Zampella) and Jason (West) getting fired from Infinity Ward,” he said. “Sledgehammer Games being brought into the fold—a brand new studio that was working on a completely different game that was then pushed into Modern Warfare 3—and fans of the franchise now being told they had to finish the story…”
In this preview of the documentary, Cade sits down with Mike Straw to talk about how it came to be, reaching out to set up interviews, taking a risk like this, and coming out of a layoff for the better.
