Build a Rocket Boy Team Facing Mass Layoffs

It has already been an awful day for layoffs across the games industry, and unfortunately, I’m here to share news of a little more. In recent hours, countless Build a Rocket Boy team members have taken to social media to stress that they’re facing redundancy and that their roles are at risk from imminent layoffs across the company.

Build a Rocket Boy has been in a very shaky position since MindsEye was released on June 10, becoming the worst-rated game of 2025 and generating a miserable sentiment in almost every review.

Inevitable

Many feared the worst when Build a Rocket Boy released MindsEye, the studio’s debut game, to a woeful reception. It was so bad that platforms like PlayStation expanded refund policies to give people back their money from sour purchases.

Even the game’s lead actor, Alex Hernandez, bagged on games being released without being ‘finished’.

Recently, countless employees currently working at Build a Rocket Boy advertised their employment availability on LinkedIn. Everyone from QA to producers, and from artists to level designers, is at risk of redundancy, and almost at once, they took to social media to try finding another role.

Build a Rocket Boy is headquartered in Edinburgh, which means UK law would apply under circumstances like this, and what looks like the entire team has entered a period of consultation. This means they’ll be given a time to weigh up their options, look for other work, and be covered by redundancy payouts.

For some, this was inevitable, given the shocking state in which MindsEye was released. It’s not yet clear if the entire company is set to be impacted, as the terminology used isn’t consistent. On LinkedIn, some employees have framed it as ‘the rest of my colleagues’, while some have termed it ‘one of many at risk’, or something similar.

We’ve reached out to determine how widespread the redundancies are at Build a Rocket Boy. Let me know on the Insider Gaming forum if you saw this coming.
