When mod support finally comes to Baldur’s Gate 3 in the future, it’s likely to be the last major update for the game from developer Larian Studios. The studio is going to then shift focus to other non-Baldur’s Gate projects.
“One of the big things for us, and the one that we’re really working towards now, is the ability for players to mod [Baldur’s Gate 3] themselves, because then they will be able to make their own things,” Larian CEO Swen Vincke said during BAFTA’s An Evening with Baldur’s Gate 3 on Friday night. “And I think that will be the point where we’re going to say ‘ok, now it’s yours fully’.”
Development on mod support for the game is still ongoing, and there’s no firm date for its release aside from September. When it comes, though, Vincke says that the team is excited to move on to work on its new games.
“We’re working on our new thing, we’re super excited about the new games,” he said. “We’re creative spirits also, we don’t want to keep on doing the same thing, we really want to move forward and do new things.”
Despite major development and updates coming to an end sooner rather than later for Baldur’s Gate 3, support for the game won’t be ending entirely. Vincke said that the team will see support continue but limited to critical bug fixes and the like. Up to now, he said, development has continued as though the game was just launched.
Mod support will be a part of Patch 7 for the game. In addition to mods, Patch 7 will include bug fixes, a photo mode, improved evil endings, and more.
