Epic is Rushing To Patch AI Darth Vader Slurs in Fortnite

Epic Games made a risky decision and decided to introduce an AI Darth Vader character to Fortnite. Once players have managed to defeat the iconic Star Wars legend, Vader decides to join the squad and fight alongside those who best him. Using in-game voice chat, you can talk to AI Darth Vader, and some mischievous gamers have tried to use that for nefarious means.

On social media, clips have surfaced of AI Darth Vader saying some questionable things, with players finding exploits in his ‘ruleset’ and circumventing censorship applied by Epic. The gaming titan has been quick to hotfix these slips, but it’s proving tricky.

We Broke AI Darth Vader

It took mere hours for players to jailbreak AI Darth Vader in Fortnite, pumping him full of tricks to make him say slurs and other ill-sounding phrases.

In a clip shared on social media by GasSpares, AI Darth Vader is tricked into uttering a homophobic slur, which earned a cacophonic reaction from those in the party.

Epic Games was hot on the heels of this incident, writing in the comments under the post:

Darth Vader was replying to the player’s prompt around “carcinogens” in this context, and we have hotfixed so he should not respond that way.

This isn’t the first example of players breaking AI Darth Vader, and you can bet every dollar you have that it won’t be the last. The rules controlling Vader make him unable to outright curse, mention V-Bucks, repeat too many lines related to Disney or Star Wars media, and he’s prohibited from discussing the harming of children.

Those rules are obviously imperfect, and the workarounds are being discovered.

Have you made AI Darth Vader say anything wild? Let me know on the Insider Gaming forum.
