A new game that had been in development at World’s Edge has been cancelled. According to multiple now-former employees at the developer, the next project from the Age of Empires developer is no longer happening.
The cancellation comes as Xbox has laid off more staff and put the studio under Activision.
Was It A New Age of Empires?
Though details on the shelved project are unknown, speculation suggests that it was a new Age of Empires game.
The studio’s former creative director Adam Isgreen said the studio had “some great plans for what’s next”. That was then followed up by a post from senior software engineer Andrew Martz, who confirmed that, because of the reorganization under Activision, the next project was cancelled.
Of course, nothing can be definitively said right now about whether the next game was going to be a new Age of Empires. At the very least, however, it was almost certain to be a new real-time strategy game that the studio is known for.
With the continued restructuring, or “reset”, by Xbox, World’s Edge saw nearly half of its studio let go. These cuts are part of the original 3,200 announced in July. The first 1,600 happened at the initial announcement, with more to come by the end of the year.
