Crimson Desert has been on the market for just over a month. It dropped midway through March and impressed players with a massive, open-world environment with plenty to uncover, but many felt the game’s story was somewhat lacking. It drove down some review scores, with some writing that the game was inconsistent and missing some depth.
In a recent AMA on Reddit, the mocap actor and likeness behind Kliff, the game’s protagonist, became the latest to acknowledge the game’s holes.
Crimson Desert Has Plenty of Meat
Crimson Desert has gone on to sell millions of copies, and Pearl Abyss is busy pouring quality-of-life improvements into the game to address some of the more glaring issues. Many have argued that if the game had been released now, enough has already changed that it would garner stronger reviews.
However, one thing that can’t really be changed is the game’s core campaign. It’s lengthy and spread over many chapters, but some feel it’s inconsistent, has poor pacing, and suffers from a lack of depth.
That was alluded to by Trevor McEwan during a recent AMA on Reddit. McEwan is a performance capture actor and provided the motion and face for Kliff, Crimson Desert’s gruff lead, voiced by Alec Newman.
When asked how he feels about the plot of Crimson Desert, McEwan transparently said:
I think what it lacks in narrative it more than makes up for in other aspects. There’s also lore hidden across the world as well, if players don’t mind a bit of reading.
(Thanks to GamesRadar for the spot)
McEwan also revealed that he worked on the motion capture and stunts alongside a Korean team, which was responsible for securing the more ‘dangerous’ sequences. He contributed mostly to the cinematics and cutscenes that try to flesh out that fledgling story.
Admittedly, he said that Crimson Desert turned out ‘better than (he) had hoped,’ suggesting that while it’s not perfect, it did exceed expectations. Even the switch from an MMO model to a single-player game didn’t impact his role too much:
Other changes affected the overall story mostly. Kliff stayed Kliff throughout development for the most part.
