Metro Author Promises 2039 ‘Will Be Darker Than Anything You’ve Seen’

Recently, 4A Games and Deep Silver unveiled Metro 2039, the next long-awaited major release in the post-apocalyptic series. The announcement was met with jubilation from fans worldwide, and on April 16, a new trailer will drop to showcase the game in much more detail.

In a post on social media, the author of the original Metro books, Dmitry Glukhovsky, made a chilling promise to fans of the dark, immersive franchise.

Metro 2039 Might Be Controversial Levels of Dark

We knew that Metro 2039 would come with a side of darkness thanks to a post published by 4A Games several months ago. The team explained that the game’s development had been impacted by the invasion of Ukraine, making it darker than anything they’d made yet.

Now, the creator of Metro, Dmitry Glukhovsky, has doubled down on that claim:

Glukhovsky has had his share of legal issues in Russia thanks to his speaking out against the government and the invasion of Ukraine, which he has long opposed. This has prompted some fans to be concerned that Metro 2039 might be a divisive, political campaign against the concept of Russia.

Given that Metro represents one of the grittiest, most disturbing post-apocalyptic franchises ever made, it’s worrying to think how it could get even darker in 2039. Historically, we’ve seen scenes depicting the deaths of children, haunted metro tunnels occupied by fascists, and sequences tied to torture, genocide, and slavery.

From what we know about a recent story leak, the concept of Metro 2039 revolves around breaking into the metro from outside the city of Moscow and contending with an iron-fisted ruler, joining sides in an all-new war for the underground.

How do you think Metro 2039 will be darker than anything we’ve seen yet? Let us know your thoughts on the Insider Gaming Discord server.
