Multiple Riot Games Titles Banned for Under-18s in Brazil

Riot Games has announced that the majority of its games are changing age ratings to 18+ in order to comply with new laws in Brazil.

The Statute of Children and Adolescents (ECA) will come into effect in the South American country on Tuesday, March 17, with age verification and parental control requirements being enforced.

Riot Games Titles Have Age Rating Change in Brazil

From Monday, March 16, League of Legends, TeamFight Tactics, Wild Rift, 2XKO, and Legends of Runeterra will all be rated as 18+ games in Brazil.

Meanwhile, Valorant players aged between 12 and 17 will need parental consent in order to access the first-person shooter.

Players of these 18+ games in Brazil will have to verify their age before playing with either a CPF number (tax identifier), payment card (debit or credit card), scan of an identity document, or via an age estimation facial scan.

Valorant fans aged under 18 will need to provide an email address of their father, mother, or legal guardian, who will then have to give permission through Riot’s parental control portal.

However, on the Riot Game website, the publisher claims it expects that these games will have their age ratings return as soon as next year:

“We will continue to evaluate these games and their features under the requirements of the ECA and expect them to return to their original age ratings by early 2027.”

Underage Gamers in Brazil Will Lose Access to Riot Games Accounts

From March 18, Riot Games accounts belonging to underage players, who were honest about their age, will be blocked and put on pause for games that have had their rating changed.

However, these players won’t lose their accounts, the progress they’ve made, or any cosmetics they’ve bought. Riot claims these accounts will be put on pause securely and will return to normal once the player is allowed to access them again.

The publisher then stated again that it aims to return the age ratings of its games back to their original status in early 2027. At that point, players with blocked accounts will need parental permission to play again.
