Styx Developer Throws Shade at Ubisoft’s Stealth Games

Styx: Blades of Greed dropped yesterday, presenting players with a stealth-driven, goblin-backed adventure packed with brutal kills, open environments, and quips from a protagonist accurately described as ‘caustic’.

In the reviews surfacing online, Styx has been doing very well for itself, earning decent scores from critics. It’s the third game in the series, which emerged in 2014 with Styx: Master of Shadows. In a recent post on social media, the developers took the opportunity to throw shade at competing franchises based on the positivity surrounding the launch of Blades of Greed.

Pay Attention, Assassin’s Creed

Styx: Blades of Greed was given a positive review by Eurogamer, and the social team at Cyanide Studio took it upon themselves to go on the offensive against other developers. Of course, it’s all in the character of Styx himself, a volatile goblin prone to self-deprecation, harsh humor, and sarcastic one-liners.

When news of the positive reviews hit the airwaves, Cyanide went straight to social media, calling out Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed brand:

It didn’t end there. One user asked what Styx would do when faced with the ‘GOAT Sam Fisher’, the frontman of the legendary Splinter Cell series, arguably the most iconic stealth shooter ever made.

In response, the team at Cyanide simply wrote, ‘Sam Fisher stays in the shadows.’

It got a bit close to the wire when someone asked them to comment in French, so Ubisoft could ‘understand properly,’ and the social team wrote:

Styx has also openly challenged the likes of Agent 47 and Big Boss, which is ambitious.

Have you played Styx: Blades of Greed? Is the game good enough to warrant the arrogance from the developer’s social media team? Let us know what you’re thinking on the Insider Gaming Discord server.

  • Honestly, i am a fan of “Of Orcs and men” and the previous 2 games in the Styx series. They are eurojank but quality eurojank. I enjoyed them for what they were. And they get on sale for peanuts these days on Steam.

But really, no, don’t do it man…. First of all Assassin’s Creed games weren’t really that much about Stealth, even with the original back in the day.

Second of all, in my not so humble opinion, the best Stealth game ever made was Skyrim, and no one has ever toppled that, not even bethesda themselves. People really downplay Skyrim until someone points out to them that Skyrim is not just an RPG but it is an immersive sim and has elements that in the past you could only find on games like the original Thief series, the grandaddy of stealth…

Stuff like lighting and sound matter to conceal you. And you can even throw arrows as a distraction for example. Stuff like that. It is just that since the stealth elements were so organically interweaved with the rest of the game, people didn’t really pay much attention, even though stealth archer was the most popular archetype. Personally i loved stealth+dagger because it better showcased how awesome of a stealth game Skyrim could be.

As for the brand new Styx game, i think it is not as good as the previous one, from what i gather and what i have watched. I am still planning to buy it at some point but knowing that it is going to go on a big sale in the not very distant future and i lack the pc specs to play it properly today, i prefer to wait.
