Quarantine Zone: The Last Check was released just a few days back, emerging on PC Game Pass as a bonus for subscribers. It’s a base management simulator that puts players in control of a besieged checkpoint during a zombie apocalypse, and it’s pretty good.
Yesterday, Quarantine Zombies was released on Steam, created by the ‘former lead game designer of Quarantine Zone.’ In the marketing materials for the game, it has been stressed that it ‘includes everything Quarantine Zone is missing’, including driving, an open-world map, and ‘modern shooting.’
Quarantine Zombies Isn’t Quarantine Zone
Quarantine Zombies looks exactly like Quarantine Zone in many ways. It features a checkpoint system, at which players must examine survivors, but it goes beyond the gates and allows users to venture out into an open-world rendition of Chicago. The story also differs from Quarantine Zone: The Last Check, but the differences don’t run much deeper than that.
In a post on Reddit penned in November 2025, we learnt that Quarantine Zombies was inspired by Quarantine Zone after the developers played the demo for the latter title and enjoyed it. However, what has subsequently been created is so close that you could float a potential lawsuit around this.
Bizarrely, the post on Reddit came with a very strange promise:
The demo version of Quarantine Zone made a lasting impression on us, and our team, inspired by it, decided to create our own vision and further development of that idea.
Our game features deep shooting mechanics and a strong weapon impact. In addition to inspecting the infected at checkpoints, you can place them in quarantine chambers and monitor the progression of the infection. Earn money by going on raids into the infected, fully open city of Chicago in your own car. Survive 30 days until the army arrives — and save your brother.
The story campaign lasts several hours and features voice acting for the main character by a Hollywood actor. There are over 32 million unique infected voice lines.
Those 32 million unique infected voice lines are only achievable by using AI, and the voice acting ‘by a Hollywood actor’ suggests voice replication has played a part in the creation of Quarantine Zombies.
Quarantine Zombies might boast more mechanics, but more doesn’t equal better.
This is a pretty interesting situation, and we’ve reached out to the developers of both games for more information.
