Todd Howard Revealed What Makes Fallout Special To Him

Fallout’s second season is on the horizon. In just two weeks, the first episode of the all-new season will drop, taking viewers to New Vegas all over again, fifteen years after the game of the same name dropped into the post-apocalyptic lineup. Recently, Bethesda and Prime Video hosted a series of special preview screenings, exclusively for invited industry personalities, press, and superfans.

These screenings allowed a select few (including myself) to see the first two episodes of the new season, alongside the cast and some other notable names. At the London preview, Todd Howard took to the stage alongside the likes of Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Aaron Moten to talk about what makes Fallout so S.P.E.C.I.A.L.

The Duality of Man (and Fallout)

Fallout has always had a perfect formula that manages to maintain a neat balance between the bizarre, the hilarious, and the brutal. It’s a franchise ridden with easter eggs, hidden gems, and some pretty inane sequences, but at the same time, it can be visceral, grisly, and emotional.

That’s effectively what Todd Howard stresses is the thing that makes Fallout so special.

Before the special preview screening started in London, Todd Howard offered his two cents:

The trick to Fallout are those two tones. I think for me, the opening of the whole series, episode one, that beginning…

You see the horror of nuclear devastation, and here comes the bomb, and it jump cuts, and Ella (Lucy) is like, ‘My reproductive organs are intact and fully operational!’

Putting those two things together at once, that’s what makes Fallout special.

Fallout’s second season will be released on a once-per-week schedule, with the final episode in the season not dropping until February 4. It’s going to be worth watching, of course. The first series won awards, and the second series takes people back to one of the most beloved settings in franchise history.

Having seen the first two episodes already, I can confirm that it’s going to be widely appreciated by fans of the games.
