In a new interview, it was revealed that the Horizon Steel Frontiers team was the most eager to use AI in development, and the tech was used extensively.
For those unaware, Horizon Steel Frontiers is a recently announced MMORPG that is coming from the hands of PlayStation and NCSoft. The game has yet to receive a release date, but we do know that it will be available for mobile devices and PC. Now, new details about the game’s development and the use of AI have surfaced online.
Horizon Steel Frontiers Team is the One that Wants to Utilise AI the Most
During a new interview with RuliWeb, translated by a user on ResetEra, the development team discussed the use of AI in the development of Horizon Steel Frontiers. When asked about introducing AI NPCs when the game was first introduced as Project Skyline, the devs confirmed that they are “testing and receiving help from basic NPCs in the process of cooperating or fighting together in combat.”
The report added that AI is helping in various aspects of the game, “such as determining the optimal number of players for gameplay rather than playing with a large number of users.” Moreover, internally, NCSoft is also using AI assistance for production, from coding to art. They added that the AI is being “substantially implemented in actual development,” and they will reveal the technologies that are being used one by one at a later date.
Lastly, the devs revealed that the Horizon Steel Frontiers team is the one that wants to utilize AI the most. NCSoft is using the tech “extensively” and has stated that we should be able to observe a significant increase in AI use in games after they release Aion 2.
Horizon Steel Frontiers is Set in a Region Inspired by Arizona and Mexico
With all the talk about AI, the developers also brushed through the game’s setting. It seems that Arizona and Mexico will inspire the region, and it has been named “Deadlands”. They will be working towards “emphasizing the original work’s thematic consciousness”; at the same time, they will aim to highlight “elements such as resilience and hope through gameplay.”
The core concept of the game is “the joy of tackling overwhelmingly large machines”, which has been expanded into an MMO, and the devs will work on delivering a new combat experience. The key features will be destroying parts, working in tandem with other players, and mounting weapons extracted from machines onto carriers. The game will also “utilize the original tribal settings while providing customization options starting with body type and makeup, allowing adjustments to detailed aspects.”
In other news, Tencent has responded to Sony’s Horizon clone lawsuit, stating, “fame does not create a trademark“. What are your thoughts on Horizon Steel Frontiers using AI extensively? Leave your thoughts down in the comments, and join the official Insider Gaming Discord server.
