FaZe Falls Flat in Shock EWC Elimination by ‘Challengers Team’

FaZe Clan (the temporary rebrand of Atlanta FaZe) has crashed out of the Esports World Cup in T12 position after being eliminated by OMiT. In a dramatic move that nobody saw coming, OMiT steamrolled one of the most dominant teams in the Call of Duty League, producing a 3-1 finish and moving into the playoffs in Riyadh.

Many have now started questioning the future of the FaZe roster, which has been together since July 2023. Last year, the team claimed the top spot at the Esports World Cup and has won a couple of chips since, but are drastic changes needed or can the status quo be maintained?

FaZe Down

OMiT has had a mixed run so far in Riyadh. The team, comprised of Mamba, Craze, Mack, and Vivid, had a tough series against FaZe Clan to open the Esports World Cup for Black Ops 6, being sent down into the lower bracket to beat P7 Esports.

FaZe was pushed down (again) by Team Heretics (read: Miami Heretics), being forced to once again chall OMiT. The second passing didn’t play out in FaZe Clan’s favor, and the squad was eliminated in a historic fashion. It became the lowest tournament finish in Chris ‘Simp’ Lehr’s career thus far at T12.

OMiT wasn’t the only Challengers team to break into the playoffs, though. Five Fears also found a spot in the final stages after eliminating Cloud9 in a decisive match.

We now have the next four fixtures for the remaining eight teams in the tournament, including one special match-up:

  • Boston Breach vs. Team Heretics
  • Five Fears vs. Vancouver Surge
  • OMiT vs. Movistar KOI
  • OpTic vs. 100 Thieves

The OpTic vs. Thieves fixture is set to be the highlight of the event thus far. It was just weeks ago that OpTic Texas claimed back-to-back COD Champs wins, making history and pummelling all comers into submission.

This far into the tournament, OpTic has had an easy run and has refused to drop a single map, but could 100 Thieves be set to change that fact? We’ll know in just a few hours.
