The developers of Ghost of Yotei have confirmed that the upcoming game will not include stances in its combat mechanics.
Stances are one of the most popular mechanics in Ghost of Tsushima, adding a lot more depth and complexity to the game’s singular weapon. However, it seems Sucker Punch will be skipping this combat mechanic for the upcoming title, in favour of the new weapon additions.
Ghost of Yotei Replaces Stances with Weapons
During an interview with GamesRadar, Ghost of Yotei’s creative director, Nate Fox, spoke about the new system. Fox states that Sucker Punch has incorporated “a lot more layers to create a more improvisational feel to the combat”. The “stance system” has been replaced by weapons, and “these weapons are more than a simple visual replacement.”
Fox explains that each weapon in the world of Ghost of Yotei serves a unique purpose. Players can send enemies flying with spear attacks or engage different groups of foes using the kusarigama. Additionally, the disarm mechanic plays a crucial role in combat reactivity. Players may find themselves in situations where they’ve lost their weapons and must acquire an enemy’s weapon to overcome challenges.
Another replacement for stances in Ghost of Yotei is the arrival of guns. However, they are not the most efficient weapons in the game. When used at the right time, they can prove to be “incredibly deadly”, but they cannot be used like a melee weapon in the upcoming game.
Ghost of Yotei’s Wolf Companion
During the same interview, the developers also provided more details about Atsu’s wolf companion, who will play a significant role in combat as well. The wolf is a character that is “much more elaborate and full-figured” in the world of Ghost of Yotei. The character represents wild Ezo, connecting with not only combat but also the wilderness that surrounds you. Moreover, the wolf is not like “your dog”; it has a mind of its own. It may appear in some missions and might not in others. However, it is “always at the edge of where you’re at”.
