2025 has already been a strong year in gaming, and a few of the game of the year contenders came out of nowhere. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a perfect example. Sandfall Interactive is a small team comprising around 30 core developers, and the studio’s first game shattered expectations, surpassing roughly $25 million in revenue just a few months after its release.

Meanwhile, Dogubomb only has around 10 staff members, and the studio’s first game, Blue Prince, has players hooked. Including Balatro creator and developer, LocalThunk, who has praised it as one of the best games he’s ever played. Not to mention, heavy hitters such as Death Stranding 2, Split Fiction, and Monster Hunter Wilds all delivered memorable experiences, as expected.

It’s going to be a tall order for any of the rest of the upcoming games in 2025 to surpass what’s already released, but there are certainly a few to keep an eye on.

9. Mafia: The Old Country

Mafia is a divisive franchise. All three previous games went both ways, with some fans loving them and others struggling to get invested. Mafia III was the latest example, as reviews were all over the map, leaning more negative than positive.

The development team heard the complaints loud and clear. Hangar 13 president Nick Baynes claimed that Mafia: The Old Country goes “back to the roots of what fans love about the Mafia franchise.” The game is a prequel to the first title in the series, set in 1900s Sicily.

Just like Mafia I and II, the prequel uses a classic mob movie structure, featuring a traditional third-person linear story.

8. Dying Light: The Beast

During the day, you scavenge and explore, but at night, zombies are around every corner, forcing you to run, hide, and fight until the sun comes back up. Additionally, Dying Light: The Beast also brings back the iconic first-person parkour, giving you the flexibility to traverse the map however you like. And just like the other games, co-op returns.

7. Gears of War: Reloaded

Gears of War: Reloaded is the first series entry available on PlayStation. And for only the small ask of $39.99, fans get a chance to experience one of the best third-person shooters of all time.

6. Borderlands 4

In 2020, Ghost of Tsushima made a strong case to be The Game Award for Game of the Year, but it certainly didn’t help going up against the likes of Doom Eternal, Hades, and The Last of Us Part II, which ultimately won. Despite not winning, the samurai action-adventure game was groundbreaking and left fans wanting more.

That wait is finally almost over, as Ghost of Yotei is a sequel, set 329 years after the events of the first game. As Atsu, players set out on a quest to seek revenge against a group of outlaws who murdered her family and destroyed her home. The game uses the same unique combat system, but introduces new weapons and an open world to explore.

4. Battlefield 6

Battlefield 6 aims to right the wrongs of Battlefield 2042. DICE, Criterion, Ripple Effect, and Motive combined their efforts to create Battlefield Studios and get the series back on track. The first step of that process was Battlefield Labs, a private alpha and beta designed to test every feature before the final product ships.

All of the playtests so far have gone over well, and all signs point toward the modern FPS being a much-needed return to form. As with every Battlefield release, you can’t fully trust everything until you get your hands on it, but anticipation is at an all-time high. It’s expected “Before March 2026,” so let’s see if the old October/November launch is on the cards.

3. Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Regardless of the actual quality, mainline series Pokémon games consistently perform well financially; however, patience is slightly waning after game-breaking glitches and performance issues plagued Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Performance improvements on the Nintendo Switch 2 version helped cover up those blemishes, and that makes fans optimistic about Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The upcoming installment is set within Lumiose City, which is inspired by Paris, France, and utilizes the same 3D open-world format that has become the standard. New to this title, there is a real-time combat system that involves the trainer and Pokémon.

2. Arc Raiders

Arc Raiders is a third-person PvPvE extraction shooter that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that’s been overrun by dangerous robots. For each run, players have 30 minutes to find loot before the hostile robots launch a raid. Like other games in this genre, you lose all loot collected if you die during a run at the hands of another player or NPC robot.

To date, several beta tests for the game have been conducted, and the reception has been overwhelmingly positive.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a remake of the 2004 classic. Snake Eater made the most sense for a remake, given that it’s the first chronological game, and it just so happens that this game is also widely regarded as one of Hideo Kojima’s best works.

The prequel is set during the Cold War in the 1960s and follows Naked Snake on a mission to rescue a Russian rocket scientist tied to the creation of a nuclear superweapon. All of the beloved story and gameplay elements remain the same; there is just a fresh coat of paint.
