Since the open beta concluded, Splitgate 2 has reportedly tripled its player base, much of it credited to console success.
At the 2025 Summer Game Fest Showcase on June 6, Splitgate 2 left open beta and officially launched. The free-to-play FPS also revealed a new battle royale mode, but that isn’t what grabbed headlines.
On the Summer Game Fest stage, 1047 Games CEO Proulx donned a hat with the words ‘Make FPS Great Again’ and took multiple shots at Call of Duty. The move divided community members and turned some fans away from the game. Proulx later apologised for wearing the hat, arguing that it was done to get more eyes on the independent game. Yet, that controversy wasn’t enough to hurt player count numbers.
Splitgate 2 Player Count Numbers Surge

Under the apology post for wearing the hat on X, one fan commented, “All that matters is player numbers, how are we looking?
The Splitgate 2 social media account responded, “Our player base has more than tripled since Beta. Specifically, we’ve had a ton of recent success on console.”
For reference, the Open Beta concluded on June 6, when the game officially launched.
Proulx hat and comments about CoD weren’t the only Splitgate 2 controversies. At launch, a cosmetic bundle was available for $140, advertised as 45% off the original price.
1047 Games listened to community feedback and reduced the price to $40. Still, Proulx claimed that the decision was made by the former head of monetization, who had previously worked on Call of Duty, and was allegedly “aggressive” with pricing.
But even in light of the developing rivalry with CoD, Splitgate 2 continues to succeed.
In other FPS news, Rainbow Six Siege X is out now, Black Ops 7 pre-orders go live on June 20, and Call of Duty to Switch 2 news is reportedly coming soon.
