CDPR has acknowledged the greatest success of fellow RPG contemporaries. Since The Witcher 3’s period of domination, other award-winning games—Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3—have taken the acclaim, and this could have a direct bearing on The Witcher 4.
The Witcher 3 will go down as an all-time great video game. It took the role-playing game genre to new heights and was considered the benchmark for many years. Baldur’s Gate 3 had an equal impact in 2023, and 2025’s Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 delivers a more cutthroat and realistic approach.
Both games could directly influence and help The Witcher 4 take shape.
CDPR “Watches With Interest” Concerning The Witcher 4 Rivals

CD Projekt Red co-CEO Adam Badowski spoke to PC Gamer about The Witcher 4, the direction it’s headed, and what we can expect to be different compared to The Witcher 3.
“I love Kingdom Come because of the realism and the feeling, the sense of humor. The Kingdom Come kind of simulation, it’s great,” says Badowski. There are so many options, you can change the world, it’s super great. And we would like to keep that, we’d like to follow this trend as well.”
The interview suggests Badowski and CDPR enjoy “the more simulation-y and systems-heavy aspects of KCD2,” and these are “the things CDPR watches with interest, because this is partly The Witcher 4’s direction of travel.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 is also mentioned in the conversation. It’s implied that the BG3 influence isn’t as strong as KC2, but CDPR is still learning and absorbing details from the game and Larian Studios.
“[In BG3] there are great characters as well, but sometimes your choices, because there’s freedom of choice in Larian’s work, it pushes you to use different tricks than ours. But I think we observe each other, and there are not that many games like that, so that’s natural, yeah, and we see how players react, how fans react to those tactics.”
CDPR’s other CEO added: “To make it more clear, we definitely are not going to make a game like Larian did,” says Nowakowski. “That’s the kind of game they can make. But a lot of stuff with how the characters can interact with the world and what it does was for sure some inspiration to us.”
It will be interesting to see how much The Witcher 4 is influenced by KC2 and BG3 then. Is there anything in particular you hope crosses over into the sequel? Leave all your thoughts and hopes with us through the Insider Gaming forum.
