Echtra Games, the studio behind Torchlight 3, has been shut down by Zynga. The decision to close the studio comes roughly four years after it was acquired by Zynga.
First reported by Rebekah Valentine at IGN, Echtra Games’ closure comes as it was still working on its first game since the Zynga acquisition. In a statement given to IGN, Zynga called it a “difficult decision.”
“Zynga has made the difficult decision to cease operations at its Echtra studio, ending development on future titles and reducing roles,” the publisher said. “This decision is part of a strategic realignment of the company’s resources and priorities. We will work closely with impacted employees so they are treated with the utmost respect and consideration as we navigate this difficult process.”
After Echtra Games was acquired by Zynga, it was working on a cross-platform RPG. That game, however, was never revealed. It also comes not long after Star Wars: Hunters was also confirmed to be going offline in October.
As far as the number of people being let go, Zynga hasn’t confirmed that information. Insider Gaming has reached out to both Zynga and its parent company Take-Two Interactive for specifics on the number of people being laid off and if any will be moved to other teams within Zynga or Take-Two. Should a respond be received, it will be added to this story.
Since the start of 2025, the video game industry has seen approximately 2,322 jobs lost due to layoffs across 67 companies. When accounting for unknown and unconfirmed numbers, the real total is likely over 2,600.
