Best Spiritborn Build in Diablo 4 Season 9

The Spiritborn uses their mastery of the spirit world in the fight against Hell. Here’s the best Spiritborn build in Season 9 of Diablo 4.

Introduced as part of the Vessel of Hatred expansion, the Spiritborn is a reworking of Diablo 3’s Witch Doctor class in many ways. However, in Diablo 4, the warriors of Nahantu have traded voodoo for spirit animals.

Season 9 has added the new Horadric Powers to the game, which will boost every character’s power level and shake up the meta. So, if you’re going to stand a chance, you’re going to want the best build.

What is The Best Spiritborn Build in Diablo 4 Season 9?

The best Spiritborn build in Season 9 is the Quill Volley setup, which is back to being overpowered after it was nerfed in Season 7. The build relies on the Quill Volley ability, the Spiritborn’s mobility, and a combination of buffs from the Spirit Hall to do its damage.

While this build is mostly geared for endgame and pit pushing, it also works well when leveling through the campaign or when pushing to level cap. It’s also useful in PvP thanks to its speed and high damage.

Here’s how to put it together.

What Are The Best Skills to Use For This Build?

Skills are what define the build and combat style in Diablo 4 for every class. But you also need to know how many points you allocate to each, as well as any upgrades, if needed. For this build, we’re mostly going to use Quill Volley as our key skill, but we’ll also make use of a variety of them, such as Scourge and The Hunter.

Remember, the aim of seasonal characters is to barrel towards the endgame as fast as possible, so we’ll be keeping this in mind as we craft this build. However, this build will also work for anyone who’s playing through the campaign or wants to engage in some PvP, too.

So, for the Quill Volley build, pick the following skills as you level:

Active Skills

Select the following Active Skills with the below number of points and upgrades:

SkillPointsUpgrades
Rock Splitter1Enhanced
Quill Volley5Enhanced, Advantageous
Vortex1Enhanced, Measured
Ravager1Enhanced, Measured
Armored Hide3Enhanced, Reinforced
Counterattack1Enhanced, Reinforced
Scourge1Enhanced, Adaptable
The Hunter3Enhanced, Exalted

Passive Skills

Select the following Passive Skills with the below number of points and upgrades:

SkillPoints
Vigorous1
Unrestrained Power3
Focal Point1
Apex3
Balanced Exertion3
Follow Through2
Patient Guard1
Auspicious3
Resilient3
Brilliance3
Potent3
Furnace3
Resolution3
Spiritual Attunement3
Supremacy3
Mirage1
Prodigy’s Tempo(Key Passive)

Spirit Hall

The Spirit Hall is the Spiritborn’s unique class power, similar to the Necromancer’s Book of the Dead or the Druid’s Spirit Boons. It essentially involves choosing between the warrior’s primary spirit animals to provide special buffs and abilities.

The Spiritborn can select a Primary Spirit Animal and a Secondary Spirit Animal. For both, select the following:

Primary: Gorilla – Provides a barrier and stacks thorns, essentially protecting us and making us a more dangerous opponent.

Secondary: Jaguar – Boosts Ferocity by 1 each time you kill an enemy or damage a boss.

Paragon Board

Once you get to level 60, you’ll enter the Paragon Board, and traditional leveling will end. Instead of leveling specific skills, you’ll activate nodes that boost certain stats. However, some will boost more class-specific skills.

This is a vast space, so there’s no clear path when it comes to activating the various nodes. So instead, work towards activating the following Glyphs:

  • Canny
  • Talon
  • Spirit
  • Revenge
  • Colossal

Just activate the nodes you think are most helpful to you in the moment while you work towards the next Glyph. Every node you activate will be helpful for the Spiritborn, so don’t panic if you think you’re selecting the wrong ones.

What Are The Best Mercenaries to Choose in Diablo 4?

Mercenaries are a crucial part of your build since they were added in the Vessel of Hatred DLC. While entirely optional, every merc can add something to your toolkit, but some will be more suited to your build than others.

For example, a caster or dexterity build can often benefit from a tank watching their back, so for the Quill Volley Spiritborn in Diablo 4, we recommend hiring the following mercenaries:

Hired: Raheir

Hire Raheir as your primary merc as this will boost your defense and give you some breathing room while he distracts mobs.

For his active skills, select: Valiance, Shield Charge, and Crater for a nice balance between offensive and defensive skills – the latter primarily serving you.

As for his passive skills, select Raheir’s Guard and Iron Wolf’s Call to boost your armor and damage, respectively.

Reinforcement: Varyana

Varyana is the ideal reinforcement for this Spiritborn build. Set her skill to Earth Breaker to trigger every time you cast Scourge. This way, she will attack enemies and knock them down, allowing you to slice them into pieces with Quill Volley while they’re immobile.

What Are The Best Horadric Powers to Use?

Season 9 of Diablo 4 is all about the brand-new Horadric Powers. These have essentially replaced Boss Powers in Season 9, so for the Spiritborn, aim to find the following Horadric Powers:

  • Catalyst: Disintegrate
  • Infusion: Smoldering Ember
  • Arcana: Bottled Wind, Luminous Gem, Gleaming Conduit

It may take some time to locate them all, but these are the Horadric Powers to prioritize.

What Are The Best Items to Equip?

The gear you use is an essential part of any build in Diablo 4, and each one has some weapons and armor that are perfect for it. However, it takes time to hunt down this high-level gear, or the Legendary/Mythic Aspects that change it into an endgame item.

Below, we’ll reveal which items/Aspects you should be working towards finding this season, and while some items are random drops, others can be acquired by completing certain dungeons or by killing a particular boss.

Remember, some items and Aspects are one and the same, where some Aspects need to be planted onto different items once unlocked.
