Nintendo Backtracks on Controversial Switch 2 Cloud Save Feature Claims

The Nintendo Switch 2 supports a range of features, but the console originally did not support the Save Data Cloud feature between consoles. However, eagle-eyed viewers have spotted a quick turnaround with the feature, and it’s good news for Nintendo fans.

Umpteen questions have been asked about the move from Switch 1 to Switch 2: Pro Controller differences, Switch 2 games and cartridges, and compatibility issues. Nintendo has done its best to clear up any confusion regarding the Switch 2 so players aren’t baffled, and the transition is simple.

Many Nintendo fans are likely to still own Switch 1 games and want to transfer their saved data to the Switch 2. We didn’t think it was happening at first, but now it might be.

Nintendo Switch 2 Changes Stance on Cloud Save Data Feature

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s Nintendo Switch 2 store page, along with other Switch 1 games, has sported a disclaimer for some time reading: “Please note: this software does not support the Nintendo Switch Online paid membership’s Save Data Cloud backup feature.”

This means if you own TOTK on Switch 1, you can’t transfer your data to Switch 2. You would need to start all over again with the Switch 2 edition of the game.

But Nintendo Life has spotted a recent update. A message now explains save data better by saying you can “Continue a previous one [save file] with your existing save data.”

The old warning has now been replaced by new text: “Save data created in the second save data slot in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom — Nintendo Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on Nintendo Switch.”

In short, saved data can be transferred from Switch 1 to Switch 2, but not the other way around.

I feel Nintendo could have done a better job explaining half of the Switch 2 changes and differences. But at least this should be one mystery cleared up. Where do you stand on the Switch 2 and its battery life, the cost of its games, and everything else?
