Call of Duty: Warzone released way back in 2020, when the world was a different time, and Activision’s new FPS battle royale was king. Now, in 2026, six years on, and arguably past its peak, we might be testing Warzone in beta form.
I can’t think of too many instances where a game has had its first beta six years after launch, but this is looking like the case for Call of Duty: Warzone ahead of Modern Warfare 4.
There’s a sense that Activision can bounce back with MW4, but don’t forget about Warzone.
Warzone Beta Coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4?

The word ‘Verdansk’ will immediately show you who the Warzone fans are. That 2020 to 2022 period of CoD’s go-to battle royale game was untouchable, in an era of other BR juggernauts: Fortnite and Apex Legends.
2025 was the year of the Verdansk comeback, and the BR experienced a much-needed boom.

However, popularity has faded again, and ‘The Call of Duty Studio Community Teams’ X page is teasing a first-ever occurrence for Warzone—a beta.
On X, Detonated posted about a new Resurgence map being spotted in an MW4 ‘From The Ward’ video.
This instantly led to fan theories and speculation about incoming Warzone content.

Step forward CallofDutyCM to add fuel to the fire about the map with a couple of comments: “Find out in….beta? and “See what we are cooking in beta.”
In this writer’s eyes, this feels like a clever ploy to get people playing and talking about Warzone again, more than it is to test a new map, as the devs have clearly shown this hasn’t been an issue for the last half a decade.
We might need to prepare for the next big Warzone craze.
