Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed that 50 million PlayStation 5 consoles have been sold to consumers since 2020, marking an epic milestone for the tech and gaming titan. This news comes more than three years after the console hit the market and mere weeks after the PlayStation 5’s ‘Slim’ variant was released.
It has been a strong year for PlayStation in general, with some top-tier titles having been released and strong growth having been recognised in and around the PlayStation Plus service, which was updated on PS5 recently to allow cloud-based game streaming.
Great Success
In a statement, Jim Ryan, the current CEO and President of SIE – who will be stepping down in a matter of weeks – said:
Achieving this PS5 sales milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community and their passion for the incredible experiences created by the talented developers from PlayStation Studios and our partners. We’re grateful for all of our players who have joined the PS5 journey so far, and we’re thrilled that this is the first holiday season since launch that we have a full supply of PS5 consoles – so anyone who wants to get one can get one.
In a post written on the Sony Interactive Entertainment blog, it was stressed that the PlayStation 5 is only getting better with time. Thanks to innovations in the console’s peripherals and the ongoing efforts to develop ‘highly acclaimed hits’, the PlayStation 5 console has defined the generation with ease.
It was stated that with the extensive library of 2,500 PS5 games being readily available, ‘now is the perfect time to join the PS5 family.’
