5 Best Special Edition Consoles

Every so often a game company will release a special edition console to promote either a game or anniversary. These consoles vary widely in quality and complexity, ranging from an Xbox with a sticker on it to a full reworking of the console. Take a look here at our list of 5 best special edition consoles.

5. Classic NES Game Boy Advance SP

The NES is a classic… As the name implies. Anyone who was around for the NES has probably played Super Mario and maybe even Duck Hunt. The Nintendo Entertainment System set the standard for console gaming back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Fast forward to November, 2016, and Nintendo releases a Gameboy Advance SP with the outer stylings of a classic NES.

It may just look like a few stickers put on a silver SP, but you can also see the buttons, D-pad and even start and select have been slightly altered to resemble a NES controller. The nostalgia here is real, and any gamer who lived through that period in time will have fond memories when looking at this SP.

4. Pikachu N64

Everyone loves Pokemon. It’s unavoidable at this point and has dominated pop culture for an impressively long time. In a time where things struggle to stay relevant for more than a week, Pokemon has been able to maintain it’s status as one of the biggest IP’s in the world. Released in 2000, the Pikachu edition N64 features a vibrant blue and yellow color scheme, with Pokemon branding on the front of the console and the controller.

What really steals the show though, is Pikachu popping out of the top of the console. You also have a Pokeball as your on/off switch, and for the most adorable thing ever, Pikachu’s little foot is your reset button. Most special edition consoles feature stickers or paint to represent what they’re promoting, but this N64 went above and beyond with this one.

3. 20th Anniversary PS4

Nostalgia hits hard for some, and Sony knows this. December of 2013, Sony released the 20th Anniversary edition of the PS4. Its unique design pays homage to the original PlayStation, featuring the iconic gray color scheme with the classic multicolored logo. This nostalgic aesthetic not only appeals to long-time PlayStation enthusiasts but also serves as a tribute to the rich gaming history that has shaped the industry. Limited in quantity, this special edition console became a collector’s item, making it a must-have for avid gamers and collectors alike.

2. Star Wars Kinect Xbox 360

This special edition console transports players to a galaxy far, far away with its custom R2-D2-inspired design and C-3PO-themed controller. The attention to detail is impeccable, featuring intricate Star Wars artwork that makes you feel as if you own your very own R2-D2. Beyond its stunning appearance, the console comes bundled with an exclusive Kinect Star Wars game, allowing players to wield lightsabers, engage in epic duels, and experience the Force in a unique and interactive way. People have very mixed opinions about the Xbox Kinect, but it was still impressive technology for its time. If you are a die-hard Star Wars fan, this would have been the console for you back in 2012.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS

Released in tandem with the critically acclaimed “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D” remake, this special edition console immerses fans in the enchanting world of Hyrule. The console’s design features the legendary Ocarina of Time and the iconic Triforce emblem, showcasing the attention to detail that Nintendo is known for. Though a subtle change to the DS appearance, it represents Ocarina of Time perfectly through the designs and colors.
