Xbox Teases Return of ‘Iconic Games’ With ‘New Ways to Play’

During the Xbox Developer Summit at GDC 2026, the Xbox Game Preservation team teased the return of ‘iconic games’ with new ways to play.

Xbox came in guns blazing at GDC 2026, talking about the company’s next generation. The VP of Next-Gen also announced that developers will receive devkits, or ‘alpha versions’ of Project Helix, next year, which gives us some idea of when to expect the next Xbox console.

Xbox Game Preservation Team Confirms Classic Games Are Returning

Speaking at GDC, Xbox confirmed its commitment to keeping four generations of games playable for years to come. During the 25th Anniversary, the Game Preservation team will be “rolling out new ways to play some of the most iconic games from our past.” During the panel, eagle-eyed players spotted games like Fuzion Frenzy, Panzer Dragon, and more being teased.

The team also spoke about “breaking down the barriers between console and PC games for more seamless cross-device play.” The Xbox experience is also becoming more consistent, which will help provide developers “a more unified path to reach more players while helping reduce development costs.”

Additionally, all that Xbox knows about “building a leading gaming OS” is being brought to Windows this April. An Xbox Mode will be introduced for Windows 11, allowing you to seamlessly switch between productivity and play with a familiar full-screen, controller-optimized Xbox experience while embracing the openness of Windows.

Xbox also mentioned the “return of iconic first-party franchises like Halo and Gears of War” this year, along with titles from their partners, including Beethoven & Dinosaur’s Mixtape, Crimson Desert from Pearl Abyss, and more.

In other news, Satya Nadella has insisted that Microsoft will always invest in gaming. Additionally, check out the Xbox Game Pass Wave 1 titles for March 2026.
