Phil Spencer Confirms Xbox is Planning an Xbox Handheld, But It’s a Few Years Away

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has confirmed that Xbox is planning an Xbox handheld console, but it’s a few years away from release.

The news comes from a new interview with Bloomberg. Spencer said that the company is currently working on prototypes and considering what it [a handheld console] might do.

Spencer said the “expectation [internally] is that we would do something” in that category of the handheld console market.

However, if you’re currently saving up the pennies in hopes of buying such a console soon, Spencer promptly squashed any false expectations and said that such a device is still a few years out.

Nonetheless, rumors of Xbox’s next-generation console and a handheld device have been circulating for some time. In March 2024, Windows Central’s Jez Corden claimed that Xbox was already prototyping an Xbox handheld. Other rumors also circulated that Xbox could be planning to release its next-generation console sooner than PlayStation.

On the Xbox Two podcast, Corden said, “I know that they’ve [Xbox] have got handheld prototypes right now”. Corden soon clarified that these are “new prototypes” and not the old prototypes often referred to.

Earlier this year, Xbox announced that its next-generation console would be “unique” and “powerful.” But apart from usual buzzwords, its currently not clear on what exactly that entails.

What do you think of Xbox working on its own handheld console? Let us know in the comments or our new community forum!

"It's a few years away" kinda makes me think it's in flux along with the next-gen Xbox. I mean I know of the RDNA 5 + Zen 6 rumours but I doubt even RDNA 5 exists because it was suppsoed to be early 2026 but now totally gone from very recent roadmaps.

I wonder if it will be primarily for steaming games on gamepass?

I really wish Sony also brings back psp I still have mine and I love it. Handheld gaming is really awesome and it seems like a good move by X Box trying to push it, i just wish it is not completely streaming based like ps portal

I truly believe an Xbox handheld will be great for the community at large. It will have the same positive effects that the Series S had, it will bring it players who maybe haven't decided to get a console and prefer mobile devices.

I personally believe if they manage to incorporate the Xbox OS into the handheld allowing seamless progression between the consoles and the dedicated handheld it will be a massive hit. The ASUS ROG Ally is kinda like that via the Xbox app but it's not good enough, we need a seamless "console like" experience where we can pick it up and just play.

I believe waiting a couple of years is the right thing to do. This will allow processors like the Snapdragon X series, the Intel core ultra 200v series (Lunar Lake) and the AMD Strix Point APU's (Ryzen AI 300) to mature giving us incredible performance with excellent battery efficiency. All 3 of these show promise for high performance with more battery life than ever before.

The AMD Strix Point APU's have some of the best integrated graphics of all time. These integrated graphics are capable of outperforming dedicated graphics cards. The APU's with only 12 RDNA 3.5 compute units are expected to outperform the Radeon RX 6400 dedicated GPU, the mid range APU with 16 RDNA 3.5 compute units is said to outperform the RTX 3050 & the high end Strix Halo variant with 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units is said to outperform the Radeon RX 7600. This is incredible performance for an APU (accelerated processing unit that combined the CPU and GPU on the same die).

The reason I mentioned these APU's is because the Xbox handheld will surely use one of those APU's in their console. I truly believe we will get a handheld that's fully capable of running our entire Xbox library up to that point. The thought of owning a handheld where I can play my digital library of OG Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S games has me so hyped.

If anyone can pull it off it would be Microsoft. We have handhelds now that can run full scale AAA games and those devices are only getting better so by the time we get an Xbox handheld I believe it'll be something truly worth owning! I'm on board 💯 percent!
