5. Crime Boss: Rockay City

What do you get when you assemble a star-studded cast that includes  Michael Madsen, Chuck Norris, Danny Trejo, Danny Glover, Michael Rooker, and Kim Basinger, among others, and put them into a video game? Well, apparently no more budget to make an actual good game.

The game sits at 52% on Metacritic because of a bad story, poor dialogue and voice acting, game-breaking bugs, and more.

Says Game Informer: “Crime Boss: Rockay City is proof that star power isn’t everything. In fact, it’s a reminder that a celebrity cast does nothing for a game when it’s void of anything interesting or fun to support it.”

4. Unholy

Worst PC Games 2023 Unholy

Another game with a 52% on Metacritic, Unholy is panned for just not being that scary of a game by seemingly anyone who’s played it. The game requires players to find clues and solve puzzles all with the goal of learning what happened to your child. The premise is good, but the execution isn’t.

Says IGN, “It’s not scary enough to succeed as a horror story, its controls are too clumsy to provide a satisfying stealth experience, and its enemy and puzzle variety are too limited to make any part of the journey feel truly distinct.”

3. Testament: The Order of High-Human

Worst PC Games 2023 Testament

Testament: The Order of High-Human is a “first-person single-player action-adventure game with bits of RPG and metroidvania elements set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world.” If that sounds like too much, that’s because it is.

The game has a 41% on Metacritic largely due to it having not a single redeeming quality whatsoever. Instead, it feels like a game that throws everything at the wall, but nothing stuck.

According to IGN, Testament is “[t]he result is a tedious, frustrating, and cringe-inducing fantasy adventure RPG that goes on so agonizingly long with its bland and confusing story and god-awful combat that it turns its bad ideas into atrocious ones by sheer volume.”

2. The Lord of the Rings – Gollum

What’s there to say about this game that hasn’t been said. At 38% on Metacritic, The Lord of the Rings – Gollum is not only one of the worst games released this year but will likely go down as the biggest waste of licensed IP in gaming history.

Daedalic did so poorly with the game that its negative reception led to the company shutting down its development department. Instead, Daedalic will solely focus on publishing moving forward.

Digital Trends didn’t hold backing saying “The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a disaster in a way that I sincerely thought wasn’t possible anymore.”

1. Greyhill Incident

A game that focuses on completing quests in order to help the town residents from an alien invasion sounds like a fun premise for a game. Unfortunately, however, the game was Greyhill Incident.

Everything about the game’s execution is poor. From the boring gameplay to the awful dialog, there’s nothing that would have someone recommending this game. With a 38% on Metacritic, Greyhill Incident is the lowest-rated game released for PC in 2023.

According to Comicbook, “This had real potential to be a short, but cool horror game that leverages tension and aliens in a way we haven’t really seen in gaming. What we got instead is a flavorless game that feels like a concept for something much better.”
