The folks at Saber Interactive recently revealed a new update for World War Z, the live-service third-person zombie shooter that dropped way back in 2019. It’s called ‘Viral State’, and it arrives on November 12, bringing a smattering of both paid and free content to the beloved gory title.
Fans with an eagle eye about them will have noticed something familiar about Viral State. From the color palette and fonts used in the trailer to the setting (Miami), and from the release date to the weather featured in the update, everything smacks of Grand Theft Auto 6.
Viral State arrives just one week before GTA 6 hits the market.
GTA 6, But Undead
The new trailer released by Saber Interactive recently went a bit under the radar, but would have likely blown up if more people had cottoned on to the connection between Viral State and GTA 6. The expansion has obviously been designed as an homage to Rockstar’s upcoming open-world epic, which launches seven days after Viral State hits World War Z.
Here’s the trailer:
It’s glaringly obvious where the inspirations for Viral State come from. The set pieces, the character models, even the font and colour palette used in the marketing materials remind you of Grand Theft Auto 6.
If we compared the screenshots and trailers we’ve seen of GTA 6 to what we’ve seen from the Viral State update, there would be some frames that could be like-for-like replications. Neon-soaked beachfront scenes, high-rise towers, and more guns than you could handle – that sounds like GTA 6 or World War Z’s Viral State update at this point.

It’s not a bad thing, of course. GTA 6 has the potential to be the biggest and fastest-selling game ever, and more content for World War Z, a game that has weathered the live service market for more than six years, deserves to keep evolving.
