A surge of layoffs from Microsoft has hit Xbox in waves, leading to mass job losses and games being canceled, with The Initiative’s Perfect Dark among those impacted.
A reboot of the series first seen in the Nintendo 64 days, The Initiative was created by Xbox to develop the game, which then became a joint operation alongside Crystal Dynamics, with a planned launch on Xbox Series X|S and PC. However, it was canceled on July 2.

Why Was Perfect Dark Canceled?
Specific details on the reason for Perfect Dark’s cancelation are yet to come out, but, compared to Rare’s Everwild, the decision appears to be more severe as the news also came alongside shutting down studio The Initiative and the end of Xbox’s partnership with Crystal Dynamics.
In an internal memo from Xbox CEO Phil Spencer, obtained by Insider Gaming, the reasons for layoffs and game cancelations were to “focus on strategic growth areas.” This was a broad message, however, regarding the layoffs across Xbox and not tied to specific studios or games.
The Initiative was founded by Microsoft in 2018, attracting several industry veterans, with an announcement in September 2021 that the game would be developed in partnership with Crystal Dynamics. An announcement trailer was shown at The Game Awards in 2020, followed by a gameplay trailer at the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase.
Despite last year’s gameplay trailer, which would usually be seen as a good sign in development, the plug has been pulled just over a year later.
What Was Perfect Dark About?
Perfect Dark was a reboot of the old series from 25 years ago, set in the near-future and putting players in control of agent Joanna Dark. A first-person shooter, players had the option to engage in direct combat or adopt a stealth approach to deal with enemies, alongside a parkour system for navigation—which may have been similar to the Tomb Raider series.
The world in Perfect Dark would be experiencing an environmental collapse, with the power-wielding mega-coporations looking to address the crisis while concealing their secrets. The GEN Network was a potential solution to the crisises according across the world, collectively known as “The Cascade”, and was deployed in Egyptian capital Cairo, making it habitable once again.
Joanna Dark was due to be voiced by Alix Wilton Regan, who has starred in the likes of Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Assassin’s Creed Origins.
