For years, the concept of ‘battle royale’ has been growing rapidly in popularity. With the rise of games like Fortnite, PUBG, Warzone, and Apex Legends, the battle royale genre has become an absolute titan, generating massive value despite being powered by free-to-play games. What’s The Biggest Battle Royale Map?
Over time, the development of brand-new games is becoming increasingly ambitious. There’s a desire to build the most impressive maps, and to weave into them the most immersive features, modes, and mechanics. Once upon a time, the largest games were open-world adventures like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Grand Theft Auto, and Red Dead Redemption.
But, since the battle royale genre reared its head and started becoming insanely popular, certain titles have made efforts to challenge those maps. For some developers, creating a massive, diverse world is seen as a pivotal move to ensuring a battle royale title succeeds.
With that in mind, which battle royale has the biggest map?
And The Winner Is…
In 2020, the YouTube channel, How Big is the Map, conducted independent research on seven of the biggest maps in the battle royale genre. This research included:
- Blackout
- Warzone
- Ring of Elysium
- Fortnite
- PUBG
- Firestorm
- Apex Legends
It wasn’t a perfect experiment, but it revealed that, out of that selection, Call of Duty’s Blackout offered up the biggest battle royale map, followed closely behind by Battlefield V’s Firestorm. By comparison, Fortnite’s map – which is ever-changing but mostly remains the same size – landed a sixth-place ranking.
However, that list is outdated by now, and in actual fact, the biggest battle royale map is Warzone 2’s Al Mazrah.
Released in 2022, Warzone 2 boasts the largest map in the battle royale genre, and it’s a diverse environment to boot. It has dense, urban locales standing alongside wide-open wadis, a massive airport sitting adjacent to a fortress, and countless industrial centres. It’s tough to quantify or truly compare the biggest battle royale maps, as they all have their own dimensions and movement speeds, for example, but it’s more or less the consensus that Al Mazrah is the biggest battle royale map.
So, which battle royale has the biggest map? That trophy goes to Warzone 2… For now.
